Winter sports teams returned to action on Dec. 5 along with a few additional programs starting their respective season.
Wayne High girls and boys basketball began their season hosting Battle Creek; Wayne girls (Doane Invite) and Wayne boys (Lakeview Invite) were back on the wrestling mat; Winside (at Wynot), Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (vs. Crofton) and Tri County Northeast (vs. Bloomfield in Allen) sent their girls and boys basketball teams to the court while the Wakefield girls wrestling team visited Lyons-Decatur Northeast for a dual tournament.
From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, the Wayne High girls won 45-36 while the Blue Devil boys picked up a 36-33 victory against Battle Creek. Both teams start the season at 1-0.
Next up for Wayne High will be road action at Ponca on Dec. 6 starting at 4:30 p.m.
In Crete during the Doane Tigers High School Kickoff, the Wayne girls wrestling program finished runner-up among the 22 teams with 130 points.
Top medalists were Nyla Bolles (140) earning a first place finish, Anna Naeve (145) and Alexandria Ziska (170) both captured third as well as fourth place finishes by Lupita Alba (110) and Megan Magnuson (135).
The Wayne girls will return to the mat on Dec. 11 hosting Norfolk Catholic for a home dual starting at 6 p.m. (boys to follow).
From Columbus during the Lakeview Invite, the Wayne High boys recorded 86.5 points to place eighth among 14 boys teams.
Top medalists were Grant Maas (157) winning his weight class while Grady Maas (106) finished runner-up. Emmanuel Gonzaelz (113) took third as Ethan Gregory (126) and Trecyn Ocampo (144) both placed fifth.
In JV action, Gregorio Benito (126), Cameron Hays (138) and Clifton Kaup (157) all placed third, Edrin Mach Ixtuque (120) took fourth as Hugo Reyes (215) finished sixth.
The Wayne boys wrestling program will next host Norfolk Catholic for a dual on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. (following girls dual).
From Wynot, the Winside girls basketball team lost 61-19 while the Wildcat boys dropped a 74-33 decision against Wynot. Both teams start their season at 0-1.
Winside will be off until Dec. 11 hosting Homer starting at 5 p.m. for JV action.
From Laurel, the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge girls suffered a 52-37 loss while the LCC boys lost 71-65 against Crofton. Both teams begin the year at 0-1.
The Bears are right back in action on Dec. 6 visiting West Holt starting at 2 p.m. for JV action.
From Allen, the Tri County Northeast girls (1-1) lost 62-25 while the Wolfpack boys (0-2) dropped an 82-63 decision against Bloomfield.
The Allen/Emerson-Hubbard co-op will next host Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Dec. 12 in Emerson starting at 4 p.m. for JV action.
From Lyons, the Wakefield girls wrestling team finished third in the Lyons-Decatur Northeast dual tournament.
Wakefield began with a 42-24 loss to Fort Calhoun, lost 48-29 to O'Neill, tied Lyons-Decatur Northeast 36-36, won 36-30 over Neligh-Oakdale and closed with a 48-18 victory over NEN.
Trojans who went 5-0 were Jennifer Lopez (115) picked up in three pins (two forfeits); Jazmynn Scott (145/155) recorded two pins (three forfeits) and Natalee Nelson (190) secured three pins (two forfeits) while both Mayte Flores Garcia (135/140) (one TF, one pin and two forfeits) as well as Melony Manjarrez (140/145) (one pin, three forfeits) went 4-1.
The Trojans will next host NEN girls (Wisner-Pilger/Pender) on Dec. 8 starting at 6 p.m. in Wakefield.
