Four of the five Wayne Herald area girls wrestling teams began the week with an invite while the Winside basketball program was back on their home court on Jan. 19.
 
From Battle Creek, the Wayne girls finished seventh (80 pts), Tri County Northeast tied for ninth (44 pts), Wakefield placed 14th (41 pts) and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge rounded out the area teams in 18th (24 pts) among the 27 teams during the Battle Creek Invite.
 
Top medalists from Wayne were posted by Nyla Bolles (140) and Alexandria Ziska (170) both finishing first while Edmy Balux (105) placed third.
 
In the JV division, Gracelynn Daniels (125) won her weight class, Arianna De La Isla Cardenas (120) finished third and Leilah Bratcher (120) took fourth.
 
Tri County Northeast leaders were Kiya Tornez (155) winning her weight class while Andrea Bacilio (100) took fourth.
 
Wakefield's top performer came from Natalee Nelson (190) earning a fourth place medal.
 
Mirella Ruvalcaba (135) won the JV division.
 
LCC was led by Grace Galvin (140) placing runner-up.
 
Justice Olson (135) placed fourth in the JV division.
 
 
The Wayne girls wrestling team will next compete in the State Duals on Jan. 23 in Norfolk starting at 9 a.m. earning the #2 seed and will face #15 Thayer Central in round one (boys next join girls during Mid State Conference Championships on Jan. 24 in Norfolk at 9 a.m.).
 
The Tri County Northeast girls will next join their boys team during the Lewis and Clark Conference Championships on Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. in Homer.
 
Wakefield girls wrestlers will next travel to the Winnebago triangular on Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. (boys off until Madison Invite on Jan. 23 at 9 a.m.).
 
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge girls wrestling action will return to the mat joining the boys team on Jan. 22 during the GNAC championships hosted by Plainview starting at 1 p.m.
 
 
From Winside, the Winside girls basketball team suffered a 67-47 loss while the Winside boys dropped a 91-45 decision against Winnebago.
 
The Winside girls (5-10, dropped three straight) will next host Osmond on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. and boys (5-10, dropped fifth straight) will join their girls team on Jan. 23 at Wausa at 6/8 p.m.
