Wayne High girls basketball, Blue Devil girls and boys wrestling, Winside and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys wrestling, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge girls and boys basketball as well as Wayne State College men's and women's basketball were in action on Jan. 9.

From Pierce, the Wayne High girls basketball team dropped their second straight following a 38-27 loss at Pierce.

The Blue Devil girls (8-5) will join their boys team (7-5) on Jan. 10 at Boone Central (3:45/5:30 p.m.) in Albion.

From Lincoln North Star, the Wayne High boys wrestling team finished ninth during the 2026 Gator Invite with 72.5 points among the 10 teams. 

Top medalists were posted by Grady Maas (106), Noah Magnuson (138) and Grant Maas (157) all finishing runner-up. Maddox Ziska (285) placed third.

The Wayne High boys wrestlers team will next travel to the Malcolm Invite (9:30 a.m.) on Jan. 10.

From Malcolm, the Wayne High girls wrestling team won the Malcolm Invite with 134 points among the 26 teams who posted scoring.

Top medalists came from Nyla Bolles (140) and Alexandria Ziska (170) both winning their weight class while Ivette Ozuna (155) secured a runner-up finish.

Edmy Balux (105) took third.

In the JV division, Vanessa Anguiano Casillas (110) and Kyah Campbell (125) both placed third.

The Wayne High girls wrestlers will return to the mat on Jan. 12 competing in the Summerland Invite (Ewing) starting at 1 p.m.

From Winside, the Winside boys wrestling team finished eighth (73 pts) during their home invite while the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys placed 12th (32) among the 17 teams.

Winside leaders were posted by Braxton Hansen (120) and Stratton Sellin (165) both in runner-up. Mason Edwards (144) and Asher Uttecht (150) both took third.

Top LCC medalists came from Owen Johnson (106) with a silver medal as Alex Allison (165) and Jake Lipp (190) both finished fourth.

The Winside boys wrestling team will next compete in the Summerland Invite on Jan. 10 starting at 10 a.m. (girls host invite on Jan. 10 at 10 a.m.) while the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys wrestlers will next compete in the West Holt Invite on Jan. 16 at noon (girls next at Winside Invite on Jan. 10 at 10 a.m.).

From Laurel, the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge girls basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak thanks to a 57-48 victory while the LCC boys dropped back-to-back following a 63-55 loss against Humphrey-Lindsay.

The LCC girls (7-6) and boys (4-7) will next travel to Wayne starting at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 13.

From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, the WSC men's basketball team picked up their fourth straight win with an 86-79 victory while the Wildcat women snapped a seven-game losing streak following a 72-61 win against Northern State.

The Wayne State College men (9-6/5-4 NSIC) and women (7-8/2-7 NSIC) will next host Jamestown (ND) on Jan. 10 at 3:30/5:30 p.m.
