Wayne Herald Oct. 16 area scores

Wayne Herald local volleyball programs were busy at work on Oct. 16 with four on their home court, one opening East Husker Conference action and #7 Wayne State College took to the road.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, the host Blue Devils dropped a four set decision against Battle Creek (14-25, 19-25, 25-22, 21-25).

Wayne High (17-11) will compete in the play-in match of the Mid State Conference Tourney. The Blue Devils will face Crofton on Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m. in West Point (GACC) with the winner to compete against GACC later that evening. The in-between match will be Pierce vs. Boone Central.

From Norfolk Catholic, O'Neill and Ponca will open Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m. with the winner to face the host Knights later that evening. The middle match will showcase Battle Creek vs. Cedar Catholic.

Matches on Oct. 21 will be hosted by Battle Creek (Monday winners) and Norfolk Catholic (Monday losers). The Mid State Conference fifth place (4:30 p.m.), consolation (6 p.m.) and finals (7:30 p.m.) will be played on Oct. 23 at Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.

From Winside, the Wildcats secured a 3-0 sweep over Stuart (25-12, 25-19, 25-12).

Winside (11-12) is off until Oct. 20 as the #5 seed in the Lewis and Clark Tourney. From Randolph, the Wildcats will open against #4 Homer with first matches opening at 5:30 p.m.

From Laurel, the host Bears swept Elgin Public/Pope John (25-14, 25-15, 25-14).

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (25-3) will return to their home court on Oct. 18 as the #1 seed in the Greater Northeast Activities Conference. LCC will begin tourney play hosting #8 Hartington-Newcastle starting at 2 p.m.

From Allen, Tri County Northeast picked up a four set victory over Ponca (25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 28-26).

The Allen/Emerson-Hubbard co-op (20-4) will be off until Oct. 20 as the #2 seed during the Lewis and Clark Conference Tourney. From Homer, TCNE will await the second lowest seed following play-in competition on Oct. 18. Matches are set to open at 5:30 p.m. 

From Howells, #13 Wakefield began East Husker Conference Tourney play with a 2-0 loss against #4 Howells-Dodge (18-25, 10-25).

The Trojans (1-22) will next compete on Oct. 18 in the EHC consolation bracket from Madison (Auditorium/North/South gyms). The bottom three seeds remaining will make up Pool A and middle three seeds for Pool B both playing a triangular format while the top four seeds will compete in bracket-style for Pool C.

From Sioux Falls, SD, #7 Wayne State College won in straight sets at Sioux Falls (27-25, 25-13, 25-16).

The Wildcats (16-3/9-1 NSIC) will next entertain #15 Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
