Conference volleyball tournament matches were played for Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and Wakefield on Oct. 18 with both Winside and Tri County Northeast earning first round byes into Oct. 20. Also, it was a top 15 showdown for #7 Wayne State College volleyball on their home court on Oct. 18 as WSC women's soccer took to the road on Oct. 19.
From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, #7 WSC picked up a four-set victory over #15 Southwest Minnesota State (25-18, 23-25, 28-26, 25-21).
The Wildcats (17-3/10-1 NSIC) will next host Augustana University on Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.
From Laurel, opening round action of the Greater Northeast Activities Conference (GNAC) volleyball tournament began for top seeded Laurel-Concord-Coleridge. #1 LCC swept #8 Hartington-Newcastle (25-13, 25-18, 25-13).
The Bears (26-3) will next host the semifinal round of the GNAC on Oct. 21 taking on #4 Lutheran High Northeast at 5:30 p.m. The other semifinal match will showcase #2 Elkhorn Valley vs. #3 West Holt at 7 p.m.
The GNAC consolation (5:30 p.m.) and finals (7 p.m.) will be be on Oct. 24 in Atkinson (West Holt).
From the Madison Auditorium during the East Husker Conference volleyball consolation bracket, #13 Wakefield first suffered a three-set loss against #12 Tekamah-Herman (12-25, 26-24, 15-25) before snapping a 16-losing streak in a 2-0 sweep over #14 Madison (25-21, 25-18).
The Trojans (2-23) will play their final home match on Oct. 21 hosting Stanton starting at 5:30 p.m. Wakefield will end their regular season at Winnebago on Oct. 23 along with Homer starting at 5 p.m. for a triangular.
Lewis and Clark Conference Volleyball Tournament play began over the weekend during the play-in round.
From Homer on Oct. 20, #2 Tri County Northeast (20-4) will face #7 Creighton while #3 Bloomfield will match up against #6 Wausa. Matches will start at 5:30 p.m. with the winner's and loser's to face each other later in the evening.
From Randolph, #5 Winside (11-12) will face #4 Homer along with #1 Wynot vs. #8 Osmond. First round matches will open at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 20 with the winner's and loser's to face each other later in the evening.
Moving into Oct. 19, the Wayne State College women's soccer team lost 2-1 at Sioux Falls.
The Wildcats (5-4-4/4-4-2 NSIC) will next host Northern State on Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. before playing their final home match against Jamestown on Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. WSC will also visit St. Cloud State (10/31), Minnesota State-Mankato (11/2) and end their regular season at Augustana (11/6).
