Wayne (G/B), Winside (G/B), Wakefield boys, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys and Tri County Northeast boys wrestlers, Tri County Northeast (G/B), Winside girls, Wakefield boys basketball as well as Wayne State College basketball were busy at work on the final day of January.
From Albion during the Dale Bonge Boone Central Invite, the Wayne High girls wrestling team finished runner-up (166 pts) among the 18 teams while the Blue Devil boys took eighth (93 pts) among the 16 teams.
Top Wayne girls medalists were posted by Nyla Bolles (140) and Ivette Ozuna (155) both winning their weight class while Alexandria Ziska (170) and Jasmine Contreras (235) both followed in runner-up.
Reagan McManigal (115) and Megan Magnuson (135) each took third, Lupita Alba (105) placed fourth and Ayvree Abler (120) posted a sixth place finish.
Wayne boys leaders came from Grant Maas (157) in runner-up while Grady Maas (106) followed in third.
Emmanuel Gonzalez (113), Ethan Gregory (126) and Noah Magnuson (138) all took fifth as Isaiah Zarate (120), Trecyn Ocampo (144) and Keaton Gregory (175) each finished sixth.
In the JV division, Angel Lux (106) earned a third place medal.
The Wayne girls will next open the B-4 District Championships on Feb. 6-7 in Ogallala (Fri - 5 p.m. CT/Sat - 10:30 a.m. CT) while the Blue Devil boys will next travel to the Wakefield Invite on Feb. 7 at 9 a.m.
From Ainsworth, the Winside boys wrestling team finished 10th (31.5 pts) among the 12 teams.
Winside leaders were posted by a pair of fourth place medals from Mason Edwards (144) and Kale Farran (175).
The Winside boys wrestling team will be off until Feb. 13-14 during the D-1 District Championships hosted by Oakland-Craig (Fri - 3 p.m./Sat - 10 a.m.).
From Norfolk, the Winside girls wrestling team placed 10th (19.5 pts) among the 13 teams during the North Catholic Invite.
A pair of fourth place medals were awarded to Avery Brummels (100) and Aspen Sellin (140) for Winside.
The Winside girls wrestling team will next compete in the B-1 District Championships on Feb. 6-7 in Plainview (Fri. 2 p.m., Sat - 9:30 a.m.).
From Plainview, the Tri County Northeast boys wrestlers placed seventh (76 pts) while the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys finished 12th (36 pts) among the 15 teams.
TCNE medalists were Braxten Sebade (150) and Nate Franzluebbers (285) both finishing third.
Landon Newton (126) took fourth while Aidan Isom (144) and Logan Kraemer (157) each took sixth.
LCC leaders came from Jake Lipp (190) who collected a bronze medal while Owen Johnson (106) and Alex Allison (165) both took fourth.
The Tri County Northeast boys wrestling team will be off until Feb. 13-14 during the D-1 District Championships hosted by Oakland-Craig (Fri - 3 p.m., Sat - 10 a.m.). (girls will next compete in the B-1 District Championships on Feb. 6 (2 p.m.) and Feb. 7 (9:30 a.m.) hosted by Plainview).
The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys wrestling team will next travel to Leigh on Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. for an invite (girls off until the B-1 District Championships Feb. 6-7 hosted by Plainview (Fri - 2 p.m., Sat - 9:30 a.m.).
From North Bend, the Wakefield boys wrestling team finished 10th (50.5 pts) among the 15 teams during the East Husker Conference Championships.
The Trojans were led by Lane Fischer (138) and Ruben Vega (165) both earning a silver medal while Baldwin Garcia (106) took third.
Hayden McAfee (120) finished fourth, Ezequiel Ramirez (165) followed in fifth and Israel Garcia (126) placed seventh.
Arnulfo Barboza (285) posted an 11th place finish.
The Wakefield boys wrestlers will return to their home mats during the Wakefield Invite on Feb. 7 starting at 9 a.m. (girls will next compete in the B-1 District Championships hosted by Plainview Feb. 6 (2 p.m.) and Feb. 7 (9:30 a.m.)).
From Wakefield, #7 Wakefield boys (basketball) secured a 76-49 victory against #10 Tekamah-Herman during the opening round of the East Husker Conference Tournament.
The Wakefield boys (12-6, five-game winning streak) will next visit #2 Pender on Feb. 3 during the quarterfinal round (#14 Wakefield girls, 3-16, vs. TBD on Feb. 2 during first consolation).
From Winside for the opening round of the Lewis and Clark Conference girls basketball tournament, #8 Tri County Northeast ended a 10-game losing streak thanks to a 46-45 win against #9 Creighton while #6 Winside picked up a 41-27 victory over #11 Osmond.
From Creighton for the opening round of the boys division, #10 Tri County Northeast snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 57-45 victory at #7 Creighton.
#8 TCNE girls (4-14) will next travel to #1 Bloomfield on Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. as the 10th-seeded Wolfpack boys (3-15) will visit #2 Randolph on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
#6 Winside girls (7-12, snapped two-game losing streak) will next travel to Wynot on Feb. 2 and face #3 Homer at 6 p.m. while the sixth-seeded Winside boys (5-12) will begin the Lewis and Clark Tourney on Feb. 3 facing #3 Wausa in Randolph at 6 p.m.
Back at Rice Auditorium for a second straight day, the Wayne State College women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak thanks to a 61-50 victory while the Wildcat men won their fifth straight with a 76-67 win against Bemidji State.
The WSC women (10-12, 5-11 NSIC) and men (14-8, 10-6 NSIC) will next visit Winona State (MN) on Feb. 5 and travel to Concordia-St. Paul (MN) on Feb. 7. Women's games will start at 5:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. each day followed by the men.
