Several local boys wrestlers will join the area Wayne Herald girls at state following district competition while Wayne (B), Tri County Northeast (G/B) and Wayne State College (W/M) were on the court on Feb. 14.
Other Valentine's Day action was held for Wayne State College women's and men's indoor track and field as well as Kyler Parker for Wayne boys co-op swimming.
From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School during a boys only contest, Wayne suffered a 62-44 loss against Bennington.
The Blue Devil boys (11-12, dropped third straight) will close out their regular season on Feb. 20 hosting Pierce at 7:30 p.m.
The Wayne girls (14-10) have earned the #3 seed during the C1-4 Subdistrict hosted by Omaha Nation in Macy. The Blue Devils will match-up against #2 North Bend Central at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 17.
From Fort Calhoun, the Wayne High boys wrestling team finished the B-2 District Championships in sixth (87 pts) among the 12 teams.
Blue Devil state qualifiers were led by district runner-up finishes by Grady Maas (106), Grant Maas (157) and Maddox Ziska (285) while Emmanuel Gonzalez (113) secured a fourth place district finish to qualify for state.
Wayne girls state qualifiers are Edmy Balux (105), Lupita Alba (110), Ayvree Abler (125), Nyla Bolles (140), Ivette Ozuna (155) and Alexandria Ziska (170) and will open first round matches on Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. in Omaha.
The 2026 NSAA Boys Wrestling State Championships are scheduled for Feb. 19-21 at the CHI Health Center Arena in Omaha.
Feb. 19 action for Class B/C first round matches will start at 9:30 a.m. followed by quarterfinals.
Moving into Feb. 20 for Class B/C, first round consolation matches will open at 9:30 a.m. followed by second round consolation matches before all classes will be in action that night starting at 6 p.m. for semifinals as well as third consolation matches.
Championships Saturday will showcase all classes at 9 a.m. during consolation semifinals followed by the medal round for third and fifth.
Finals will begin at 3 p.m.
Back in Oakland for a second straight day during the D-1 District Championships, the Tri County Northeast boys wrestlers tied for 11th (46 pts) while Winside placed 15th (37 pts) among the 22 teams.
Wayne Herald area state qualifiers were led by two from Tri County Northeast being Landon Newton (126) in second and Nate Franzluebbers (285) placed third while Winside's Stratton Sellin (165) captured fourth to advance to state.
TCNE also had two girls state qualifiers being Jenni Olson (100) and Kiya Tornez (155) who will open first round action at 3 p.m. on Feb. 17 in Omaha.

From Madison during the C-1 District Championships, the Wakefield boys finished 13th (34 pts) while Laurel-Concord-Coleridge rounded out the 16 teams with nine points.
Wakefield state qualifiers were led by Ruben Vega (157) finishing third while Baldwin Garcia (106) took fourth.
Wakefield will aslo be represented by Natalee Nelson (190) during the girls state tournament opening at 3 p.m. on Feb. 17.
LCC did not have a state qualifier but were led by Alex Allison (165) and Jake Lipp (190) both scoring four points for the boys.

From Macy, the Tri County Northeast girls basketball team concluded their regular season with a 72-31 loss while the Allen/Emerson-Hubbard boys co-op dropped a 69-45 decision at Omaha Nation.
The TCNE girls (5-17) will next open postseason play as the #5 seed in the D1-4 Subdistrict held in Bancroft. Tip-off on Feb. 16 is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Wolfpack boys (4-20, dropped four straight) will next close out their regular season at Stanton on Feb. 20 starting at 6 p.m.
Kyler Parker returned to action (Wayne boys co-op) with the Norfolk swim team during the Heartland Athletic Conference Championships.
As a team, the Panthers tied for second with Lincoln East scoring 310 points.
Parker made finals in both the 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter fly while competing in both relay events of 200-meter medley and 400-meter freestyle.

From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, the Wayne State College women's basketball team played the top ranked team in DII within six points following a 77-71 loss while the Wildcat men also suffered an 81-69 defeat against Minnesota State-Mankato.
The WSC women (10-16, 5-15 NSIC) and men (14-12, 10-10 NSIC) will next visit Sioux Falls on Feb. 18 at 5:30/7:30 p.m. Both teams will be in search to snap four-game losing streaks.
Wayne State College women's and men's indoor track & field student-athletes competed in two separate locations during the SDSU Classic in Brookings, SD and the Concordia (NE) Invite in Seward.
The SDSU Last Chance Invite is scheduled for Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. back in Brookings, SD ahead of the NSIC Championships in Mankato, MN Feb. 27 - 28.
