Wayne Holiday Tournament returns to Rice

Once the moratorium break concludes for NSAA high school basketball teams on Thursday, several northeast Nebraska holiday tournaments will take place including the lone in the area featuring eight girls and eight boys programs.

From Rice Auditorium, 20 of the 24 Wayne Holiday Basketball Tournament games will be played on the campus of Wayne State College with the fifth and seventh place games held at Wayne High School.

First round games will open on Friday, Dec. 27 followed by winner’s and loser’s bracket games on Saturday, Dec. 28. After a day off from Sunday, teams will return for a third game on Monday, Dec. 30. Consolation and finals will be held at Rice with seventh and fifth place games played at Wayne High School.

  In the girls Division, Class C1 Pierce (3-1) will open with Class A South Sioux City (2-4) at 9:30 a.m.; Class D1 Cedar Catholic (4-2) will face the Class D1 defending state champs of Pender (7-0) at 12:30 p.m.; the host Class C1 Wayne (2-4) will play Class C1 Winnebago (1-5) at 4 p.m. before closing out the night with Class C1 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (4-2) vs. Class B Plattsmouth (5-1) at 7 p.m..

Last year, Pender defeated South Sioux City, 60-32 in the finals.

During the boys Division, Class C1 Pierce (1-3) will open with Class A South Sioux City (3-3) at 11 a.m.; Class C2 Cedar Catholic (2-2) will face Class C2 Pender (6-0) at 2 p.m.; the host Class C1 Wayne (5-0) will play Class C1 Winnebago (3-4) at 5:30 p.m. before closing out the night with Class C2 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (4-2) vs. Class B Plattsmouth (1-5) at 8:30 p.m.

Last year, Wayne defeated Cedar Catholic 49-39.
