Wayne Ikes to hold annual Youth Fishing Derby

The Wayne chapter of the Izaak Walton League recently announced they will be hosting their annual Youth Fishing Derby.

The event will be held on Saturday, June 15. Free registration begins at 9 a.m. with fishing from 9:30 – 11 a.m.  Prizes will be awarded around 11:30.

There will be a hot dog lunch for the participants and their parents/mentors.  The youth will be placed into three age groups ranging from two to sixteen and prizes will be awarded to various categories.

The Ikes have a few fishing poles that will be available to borrow for those who do not have any.

Ikes Lake is located, from the Highway 15 and 35 intersection of Wayne, four miles north, two miles west, and 1/2 mile north on the right side of the road.

Last year the Wayne Ikes was forced to cancel the derby due to a fish kill that happened the winter prior and they restocked the lake last spring. While a good portion of the fish are still small, there have been recent reports of fish being caught this year.

“This event has always been a great way to get kids involved with the outdoors, catch some fish, win some prizes and we look forward to seeing everyone this year after taking a year off.” said Ikes President Erin Eilers.

The Ikes encourages everyone to follow them on Facebook at Wayne Izaak Walton League for updates or changes to the event.
