Wayne Junior High boys earn runner-up finishes

For a third time this season, the Wayne Junior High boys basketball teams played at home.

From the Wayne Community Activity Center, the Wayne seventh and eighth graders welcomed Battle Creek, Norfolk Catholic and Pierce during the W-Club Tournament on Saturday.

The Wayne eighth graders won 34-21 over Battle Creek before falling 42-29 to Norfolk Catholic to finish runner-up while the Blue Devil seventh graders also started their day with a 38-24 win against Battle Creek followed by a runner-up finish following a 39-35 loss to Norfolk Catholic.

During the Wayne eighth grade win over Battle Creek, Mason Kramer led the scoring effort with 11 points while Jacob Francis added 10 points. Other scoring came from Colston Starzl (seven) and Remyngton Rager (six).

In the championship loss to Norfolk Catholic, the Blue Devils fell behind 16-5 after the first quarter and were never able to make up ground the rest of the way.

Leaders were Mason Kramer with 11 points followed by Jacob Francis with five points. Other scoring came from Remington Rager (four), Brayden Stegemann and Liam Rockhill (three each), Colston Starzl (two) and Kash Haase (one).

From the Wayne seventh grade win against Battle Creek, individual scorers were not available for this game.

During the championship loss to Norfolk Catholic, a late three-pointer by Merrick Miller brought the Blue Devils within two points but two free throws from Norfolk Catholic put the game out of reach.

Mason Wendte poured in 22 points to pace the Blue Devils followed by Louie Severson with seven points. Other scoring came from Hudson Willrich and Merrick Miller (both three points).
