Wayne Juniors reach final day of Class B state tournament


WAHOO -- The Wayne Juniors are playing in the final day of the Class B American Legion Juniors state tournament after a big 15-7 win over Sutton Tuesday afternoon at Sam Crawford Field.

Wayne answered every Sutton challenge early on. Sutton scored a run in the first, but Wayne answered with two in the bottom of the inning. After Sutton scored two in the second, Wayne responded with three runs to take a 5-3 advantage.

Wayne blew the game open in the fourth inning, scoring six runs with the help of five consecutive singles by Ryan Karsky, Devan Anderson, Aiden Liston, Kaleb Moormeier and Kaden Keller.

Sutton cut into the deficit with three runs to get within 11-7, but Wayne put up four more in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the eight-run rule, the final coming on Gavin Redden's single that scored Keller and Zach McManigal.

Wyatt Heikes threw five tough innings to get the win for the 27-1 Juniors. Liston led a 17-hit attack with four hits, three of them doubles. Redden had three hits while Karsky, Anderson, Keller and Jase Dean each had two hits.

Wayne will face Plattsmouth in a 5 p.m. game on Wednesday, with the winner facing Lincoln Christian in a winner-take-all final at 8 p.m.
