The Wayne Lions Club recently had two members recognized for their years of service.
Verna Mae Baier was recognized with a 25-year award and Charles Maier was recognized as a 50-year member of the club.
Verna Mae received her award on Aug. 26 from former Lions District Governor Leon Swigart. Verna Mae has been active in the Wayne Lions and served as secretary for many years. She was also the recipient of the prestigious Melvin Jones Award in 2007.
Charles Maier was presented his award at the Sept. 2 meeting from Wayne Lions President Teresa Bartlett. Charles has been active on the local and district level; he served as club President four times between 1973 and 2005 and shared the president’s office from 2016 to 2018. Charles also served as Zone Chair from 1975 to 1976 and as Zone secretary to the District Governor.
President Bartlett said “The club is fortunate to have such faithful, hardworking members as Verna Mae and Charles. They are committed to the club and the community good it seeks to do for Wayne. Verna Mae and Charles are wonderful examples of the Lion’s motto “We Serve.”
Every Lions Club seeks to serve their community and foster a spirit of understanding and cooperation.
Vision is a focus of the Lions for all ages.
On Aug. 26 the Wayne Lions hosted the Lions Mobile Eye Screening unit for a screening event at the Wayne Community Schools. Wayne Lions, the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department and other volunteers screened 385 students that day.
Lions Clubs also recycle glasses for use around the world, there is a container at the Wayne Public Library to receive used glasses, no cases please.
The Wayne Lions manage Lions Park east of town, which has a picnic shelter, camping sites with water and electric hookups and is open to the public on a first come,first service basis.
