Five walks led to six runs for the Class B No. 10 Wayne High softball team Thursday as they posted an 8-0 win over O’Neill in Mid State Conference action at the Wayne Softball Complex.
Wayne got on the board in the third inning with a pair of runs. Kiara Hochstein walked and scored on a one-out triple by Jenna Trenhaile, and Trenhaile followed her home on Annie Kniesche’s infield groundout to make it 2-0.
O’Neill’s pitching fell apart in the fifth inning. Five consecutive walks brought home three runs, and the Blue Devils ended the game on the eight-run rule when Abby Ankeny stroked a two-run double and Ashten Gibson followed with an RBI single, accounting for two of Wayne’s three hits in the game.
Hannah Belt tossed a four-hit shutout for the 4-1 Blue Devils, striking out six and walking one.
Wayne plays in the Lincoln Public Schools Classic on Saturday at Doris Bair Park. They are back home Tuesday to face Highway 91 at 6:30 p.m.
