ALBION — Wayne High’s track and field teams qualified a total of 11 entries to next week’s state meet after action Tuesday in the B-4 District at Albion.
The Blue Devil girls finished fourth in the nine-team meet and had seven qualifiers, led by senior thrower Brooklyn Kruse, who took runner-up honors in the shot put and was third in the discus.
Freshman Elle Powicki broke a 40-year old school record in winning the 100-meter hurdles title. Her time of 15.41 seconds bettered the mark of 15.54 seconds (converted), set in 1983 by Missy Stoltenberg.
Wayne’s 3,200-meter relay team also qualified by winning their event, as the foursome of Kierah Haase, Jala Krusemark, Laura Hasemann and Kyla Krusemark won the event in a season-best time of 10:08.55.
Kyla Krusemark qualified in two events, placing second in the 800 and third in the 400, and Hasemann earned a trip with a runner-up finish in the 3,200.
On the boys side, Sedjro Agoumba qualified in two events to lead the Wayne boys to a seventh-place finish. He won the 200-meter dash by three-hundredths of a second and also claimed third in the 100-meter dash.
Also qualifying for the Wayne boys were Drew Miller, taking second in the 3,200; and Alex Phelps, who gutted out a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.
Wayne will compete in the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships next Wednesday and Thursday, May 17-18, at Burke Stadium in Omaha.
