Tori Kniesche threw a no-hitter in the opener and fanned a career-high 22 in an extra-inning nightcap as the Wayne HIgh softball team won both ends of a triangular Tuesday in Dodge.
In the opener, Wayne scored 10 runs in the third inning and added six more in the fourth and Kniesche threw her third no-hitter of the season in a 17-0 shutout of host Highway 91.
Wayne got a run in the first when Annie Kniesche doubled home Kennedy Maly for the game’s first run, then came through with a 10-spot in the third to break the game open.
Highlights of the big inning included an RBI single by Sidney Biggerstaff, a two-run single by Tori Kniesche, RBI singles by Abby Ankeny and Masyn Dorey, a two-run single by Jenna Trenhaile, another RBI single by Biggerstaff and runs scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
Wayne put up six more runs in the fourth on an error, two walks, a Tori KNiesche RBI single, an RBI groundout by Jamie Gamble and an RBI double by Ankeny.
Wayne had 14 hits in the win, with Biggerstaff, Ankeny, Dorey, Tori Kniesche and Annie Kniesche each picking up two hits. Biggerstff and Tori Kniesche both had three RBI’s. Kniesche threw a no-hitter, striking out 10 and allowing two walks.
In the second game, Wayne needed extra innings to take care of Bishop Neumann, scoring four in the ninth to post a 6-2 win.
Wayne got a run in the first when Annie Kniesche scored Trenhaile with a single up the middle. It stayed that way until the fifth, when the Lady Cavs put up two runs to take the lead, but Wayne responded in the sixth when Biggerstaff brought home Trenhaile with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-2 game.
Wayne got out of trouble in the eighth and came back with four in the top of the ninth. Biggerstaff brought home Kayla Fleming to break the tie and came home on a Neumann error. Nicole Fertig scored on a passed ball and Gamble came home on an error to give Wayne the win.
Tori Kniesche had an amazing game in the circle in the nightcap, recording a career-high 22 strikeouts in the nine-inning affair. She allowed three walks and three hits in the win.
Offensively, Trenhaile had two hits and scored two runs and Biggerstaff had two RBI’s.
Wayne, 9-2, is back home Tuesday, Sept. 5 to host Lakeview in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
