Wayne softball drops season opener, hosts tourney Saturday

One week after hosting a Class A school (Norfolk High) in a jamboree, NSAA competition began on August 21 between a pair of Class B programs.

From the Wayne Softball Complex, the host Blue Devils suffered an 8-2 decision against Blair.

The visiting Bears took control early and often building a 6-0 lead in the first three innings before both teams closed scoring with a pair of runs in the fourth.

Blair (1-0) won 8-2 and outhit Wayne (0-1), 10-6. Both teams committed one error.

Wayne was led by senior Regan McGuire with a double, RBI and run scored while senior Jordyn Gamble added two singles and a RBI.

Sophomore Kinnley McGuire singled twice and scored as senior Mackenzie Nissen singled.

Nissen (76 pitches) suffered the loss in four innings allowing three runs (two earned) off four hits while striking out six batters and walking three.

Gamble (30) worked two innings allowing five runs (two earned) off six hits while striking out and walking one batter each.

Wayne High will next welcome in seven teams during their home invite starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 23.

 

Wayne softball tourney schedule for Saturday, August 23:

Twin River vs. Pierce (Southeast Field) and Arlington vs. O'Neill (Southwest Field) at 9:30 a.m. The winners (Southeast)/losers (Southwest) will play eachother at 11:30 a.m.

Wayne (0-1) vs. Ord (Northeast) and Centura/Central Valley vs. Ponca (Northwest) at 9:30 a.m. with the winners (Northeast)/losers (Northwest) to play eachother at 11:30 a.m.

Final games will by played around 1:30 p.m.
