Wayne softball falls 5-0 in season opener, Blair pitcher records 18 strikeouts

Another Wayne High fall sports team took part in a ‘first-day’ NSAA contest as it was a Class B showdown for the Blue Devils.

From the Wayne Softball Complex, the Blue Devils hosted Blair on Thursday.

Thanks to consistent scoring and hitting, the visiting Blair Bears picked up the 5-0 win over Wayne to start their season at 1-0. WHS begins the year at 0-1.

Blair opened scoring with a run in the first inning. Following a scoreless second, Blair added a run in the third along with a single run in the top of the fifth to lead 3-0 through five innings. After another scoreless inning in the sixth, the Bears tacked on two more runs in the seventh to win 5-0. Blair outhit Wayne, 10-1 as Wayne committed two defensive errors compared to zero from Blair.

Courtney Roeber recorded the lone hit being a single for Wayne. Sammi Gubbels drew a walk and Reagan McGuire was hit by pitch as Wayne ran into a dominant Blair pitcher striking out 18 Blue Devils.

For Wayne in the circle, Sammi Gubbels (95 pitches) suffered the loss in six and a third innings allowing five earned runs off 10 hits while striking out five batters and walking two. Jordyn Gamble (three) recorded the final two outs.

Brooke Janning, a West Texas A&M commit, closed with the complete game victory (92 pitchers) allowing the one hit while striking out 18 batters while walking and hitting one batter each.
