Wayne softball splits road softball triangular

Two weeknight road matches continued a busy week for Wayne High softball.

From Pierce, the Blue Devils took on Boone Central and the host Bluejays on Tuesday.

Wayne High suffered a 5-2 loss against Boone Central followed by a 13-1 victory over Pierce. WHS is now 10-5 on the season.

In the loss to Boone Central, Wayne High started with the 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Cardinals then answered with a four-run third inning. Following back-to-back scoreless innings, both teams scored one run each in the sixth. Final favored Boone Central winning 5-2 despite being outhit, 7-5 as both teams finished with two errors.

Nyla Bolles singled three times and drove in a run while Mackenzie Nissen and Reagan McGuire both singled twice and scored.

Lilly Johnson accounted for a RBI.

Nissen (90 pitches) suffered the complete game loss in six innings allowing five runs (four earned) off five hits while striking out nine batters and walking three.

During the win over Pierce, the game was scoreless the opening three innings. Wayne High then controlled the game with eight runs in the fourth and five more runs in the top of the fifth to lead 13-0. Pierce avoided the shutout with a run in the home half of the fifth. Final favored Wayne winning 13-1 and outhitting the Bluejays, 13-2. Pierce committed four errors compared to none by the Blue Devils.

Lilly Johnson singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored; Rylin Hall singled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice; Jordyn Gamble singled twice, drove in two runs and scored as Bolles singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice.

Reagan McGuire singled, drove in two runs and scored twice; Kinnley McGuire singled, drove in a run and scored twice; Mackenzie Nissen and Olivia Brandow both singled and scored; Sammi Gubbels singled and drove in a run as Courtney Roeber scored.

Sammi Gubbels (65 pitches) picked up the complete game victory in five innings allowing an earned run off two hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

The Wayne High softball team will next compete in the Cass Wildcats Invite from Louisville on Saturday, Sept. 21. WHS will compete in Pool B against Centennial at 10:45 a.m. followed by a game against the host Cass (Louisville/Conestoga) at 12:30 p.m.
