Wayne Speech team earns District championship, prepares for state next Wednesday at Kearney

The Wayne High Speech team brought home the first place District B-3 sweepstakes championship on March 11.

The following members of the team placed at the event:

Olivia Hanson, fifth in Persuasive; Alondra Vega, fifth in Poetry; Jordyn Clinchard, fourth in Informative; Nyamalo Kantai, fourth in Program Oral Interpretation.

By finishing in the top three of their events, the following members of the team qualified for the State Speech Meet next week in Kearney:

Ceilus Ibarra, third in Poetry; the Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Josie Ley, Adreinne Anderson, Grace Junck, Kennasyn Blecke, and Norah Armstrong, third; Maddie Franta, second in Entertainment; Colby Raulston, second in Program Oral Interpretation; and the Duet Acting team of Colby Raulston and Maddie Franta, second.

The following Blue Devil Speakers were event champions:

Parker Kesting in both Informative and Extemporaneous; Aidan Bohnert and Alec Schaffer in Duet Acting; Alec Schaffer in Humorous; Sophia Spieker in Entertainment; Ava Elliot in Persuasive and the Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Aidan Bohnert, Johen Piper, Gabriel Armstrong, Gavin Anderson and Colby Raulston.

On the day, Wayne qualified the largest number of events and students for State Speech in school history. Additionally, Colby Raulston became the first Blue Devil in school history to qualify for the State Speech Meet in three events.

In the team sweepstakes, Wayne finished in first place, 48 points ahead of runner-up Schuyler.

Next up for the Blue Devils is the State Speech Meet Wednesday, March 20 at Kearney High.
