Wayne speech team wins districts, 12 events headed to state

Wayne High Speech captured the Class B-3 District championship on Saturday in Schuyler with a total of 12 events headed to state competition.

Wayne earned the team sweepstakes with a total of 258 points, which was   62 points ahead of runner-up Schuyler.

According to Head Coach Dwaine Spieker, "this was the most successful district finish in program history."

Six of Wayne's events earned championships honors. They include Olivia Hanson in both Informative Speaking and Persuasive Speaking; Alec Schaffer in both Humorous  and Series and the Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Johen Piper, Gavin Anderson, Gabriel Armstron, Aidan Bohnert and Colby Raulston.

Other Blue Devil speakers earning a trip to state competition included: Colby Raulston, second in Serious Prose and third in Program of  Oral Interpretation; Sophia Spieker, second in Entertainment; the Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Norah Armstrong, Ceilus Ibarra, Grace Junck, Kennasyn Blecke and Josie Ley, second and Landon Claussen in Humorous Prose and Jordyn Clinchard third in Informative.

Additional top performances came from Jordyn Clinchard, fourth in Extemporaneous; Norah Armstrong, fifth in Program of Oral Interpretation and Sienna Klinetobe, sixth in Poetry.

The 2025 NSAA State Speech championship will take place at Kearney High School. Classes A and B will be on Wednesday, March 26; Classes C-1 and C-2 will be on Thursday, March 27 and Classes D-1 and D-2 will be on Friday, March 28.
