Wayne State baseball scores season-high 22 runs during home split, go 2-2 in home series

Two teams separated by nearly 625 miles closed out a four-game weekend NSIC baseball series.

Back at the Pete Chapman Complex, Wayne State College and Minot State University went back to work against each other on Sunday.

WSC first began by recording 20 hits during a 22-6 victory followed by a 7-5 loss against the visiting Beavers.  After splitting the four-game series, Wayne State College is now 11-10 (7-5 NSIC) as Minot State moved to 12-8 (7-5 NSIC).

During game three of the series and the first game on Sunday, Minot State would strike first with a run in the top half of the opening inning.

Wayne State College then began to take control with two runs in the home half of the second. Senior Taylor Gill scored on a wild pitch followed by a RBI base hit from junior Casey Prychak scoring fellow junior Braden Cannon.

WSC would add seven more runs in the third to go up 9-1. Senior Kaden Young first posted a two-RBI base hit scoring sophomore Max Heard and Gill; redshirt freshman Connor Hunt added a RBI bases loaded walk scoring Young; Cannon and Prychak both scored on a throwing error as senior Chase Douglas doubled in both Hunt and redshirt junior Cam Madsen.

The Wildcats then produced six runs in the fourth to lead 15-1. RBI singles came from Prychak scoring Young; Hunt drove in Cannon and Madsen scored Prychak as Heard posted a three-run homerun scoring Hunt and Madsen.

Minot State plated four runs in the top of the fifth followed by Wayne State College scoring twice the next half inning. Senior Keagan McLaughlin drove in Cannon as Madsen tallied a RBI base hit scoring McLaughlin.

The Beavers scored once more in the top of the sixth.

The Wildcats closed with a five-run bottom of the sixth. Redshirt freshman Ethan Nguyen recorded a solo homerun; Hunt drove in both sophomore Brayden Chaney and junior Blake Stanley as back-to-back RBI singles came from Madsen scoring McLaughlin and Douglas drove in Hunt.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 22-6 and outhit Minot State, 20-6 while committing one error compared to two errors by the Beavers.

Cam Madsen singled four times, drove in three runs and scored twice; Connor Hunt added three singles, drove in four runs and scored three times as Chase Douglas singled, doubled and drove in three runs.

Kaden Young and Casey Prychak both singled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice; Taylor Gill singled twice and scored twice; Max Heard posted a three-run homerun and totaled two runs scored while Ethan Nguyen added a solo homerun. Brayden Chaney also doubled and scored.

Braden Cannon singled and scored four times; Keagan McLaughlin singled, drove in a run and scored twice as Blake Stanley scored.

Senior Josh Kilzer (83 pitches) picked up the win in five innings allowing five runs (three earned) off three hits while striking out four batters and walking two. Freshman Carson Obrecht (22) worked the final two innings allowing an earned run off three hits.

Closing out the four-game home stand in Wayne, WSC started with a run in the home half of the first inning. Gill first drove in Heard.

Minot State answered with two runs in the top of the second followed by WSC with a single run a half of an inning later thank to Madsen with a RBI base hit scoring Young.

The Wildcats scored another single run in the bottom of the third to lead 3-2. Young added a sac-fly scoring Heard.

Minot State then scored twice in the top of the fourth and following a scoreless fifth the Beavers added three more runs in the top half of the sixth to lead 7-3.

WSC scored two more runs the next half inning to close out scoring in the nine-inning game. Gill drove in Madsen and senior Quinn McCafferty posted a RBI groundout scoring Heard.

Final favored Minot State University winning 7-5 despite Wayne State College winning the hit department, 10-8 while committing one error compared to three by WSC.

Max Heard doubled twice and scored three runs; Kaden Young tripled, drove in a run and scored as Connor Hunt tripled.

Cam Madsen singled, drove in a run and scored; Quinn McCafferty singled and drove in a run; Taylor Gill singled and drove in two runs as Chase Douglas, junior Nate Cunningham and Casey Prychak all singled.

Senior Tyson Romero (79 pitches) suffered the loss in four innings allowing four earned run off six hits while striking out and walking two batters each.

Wayne native senior Jacob Kneifl (24) followed the next inning and two-thirds allowing three runs off one hit while walking two batters and hitting one. Senior Kadyn Van Hill (22) worked two innings allowing one hit while striking out two batters. Wayne native redshirt freshman Brooks Kneifl (4) pitched a third of an inning forcing a flyout. Braden Cannon (13) closed out the final inning striking out two batters.
