Wayne State baseball suffers two losses Sunday falling behind in series, Monday noon first pitch concludes NSIC opener

Doubleheader Sunday took over the weekend schedule for the Wayne State College baseball team continuing their weekend trip to Colorado.

Back in Pueblo, Colorado, WSC and Minnesota Crookston played twice to close out the weekend after Wayne State College secured a 12-1 win Saturday late afternoon over the Golden Eagles.

On Sunday, Wayne State College suffered back-to-back losses of 8-0 and 11-6 against Minnesota Crookston as UMC now leads the series at 2-1 with one game remining on Monday.

WSC fell to 2-5 overall (1-2 NSIC) as the Golden Eagles moved to 3-3 (2-1 NSIC).

In the first game on Sunday (second game of the series), Minnesota Crookston scored twice in the home half of the first inning before posting a three-run third inning to lead 5-0. Following a scoreless fourth, Minnesota Crookston tallied a single run in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth.

Final favored UMC winning 8-0 and outhitting Wayne State College, 10-2 while no errors were committed by either team.

Senior Quinn McCafferty doubled while junior Gabe Monosmith singled for WSC.

Junior Clay Beaumont (pitch count NA) suffered the loss in two and a third innings allowing five earned runs off six hilts while striking out two batters as well as walking and hitting one. Junior Keinan Lentell worked three and a third innings allowing three earned runs off three hits while striking out one batter and walking two. Junior Adam Eggert recorded the final out via strikeout after allowing one hit.

During the backend of the Sunday doubleheader, host Minnesota Crookston on the neutral field would strike first with two runs in the home half of the first inning.

Wayne State College scored their first run on the day thanks to a solo homerun by junior Nate Cunningham during the top of the second. UMC answered with two more runs in the second to lead 4-1.

Following a scoreless third, the Golden Eagles plated a run in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth to lead 8-1.

The Wildcats brought in a run during the top of the sixth from a double by junior Casey Prychak scoring Cunningham followed by three more runs in the home half of the seventh for UMC to go up 11-2.

Scoring closed out for WSC with a single run in the top of the eighth where junior Blake Stanley scored on an error followed by three more Wildcat runs in the ninth. Stanley drove in senior Taylor Gill as Monosmith and McCafferty both scored on an errors.

Final favored Minnesota Crookston taking the sweep of 11-6 and outhitting WSC, 14-9 while committing two errors compared to three errors by the Wildcats.

Cunningham finished the second game with a solo homerun, single and two total runs scored; McCafferty doubled and scored as Prychak doubled and drove in a run. Other multi-hits came from redshirt sophomore Noah Strizek and senior Chase Douglas both with two singles.

Stanley singled, drove in a run and scored as Gill and Monosmith both scored.

Freshman Carson Obrecht (pitch count NA) suffered the loss in an inning and a third allowing four runs (two earned) off five hits while striking out two batters as well as hitting and walking one each.

Senior Josh Kilzer followed with three and a third innings allowing four runs (three earned) off seven hits while striking out six batters and walking one. Sophomore Conlin Grady worked two and a third innings allowing three runs (one earned) off two hits while striking out five batters and walking one. Senior Tyson Romero closed out the final inning with two strikeouts and a hit batter.
