Wayne State baseball sweeps at Southwest

Wayne State got a complete-game two-hitter from Taner Ledezma in the opener and an eight-run 10th inning to cap a wild second game and pick up a sweep over Southwest Minnesota State in action Tuesday at Marshall, Minn., winning 4-1 and 17-9.with a 17-9 win, completing a sweep at Southwest Minnesota State Tuesday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference baseball played at Alumni Field in Marshall, Minn.

Taner Ledezma fired a complete-game two-hitter in the opener, and David Janes went 3-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.

Wayne State scored three in the second on three hits and two SMSU errors. Kyle Thompson singled and scored on a Mustang throwing error, Jackson Petersen singled home Bryce Bisenius and Janes scored on a failed pickoff attempt to give the Wildcats the early 3-0 advantage.

Southwest Minnesota State scored its lone run of the game in the second inning, but the Wildcats added an insurance run in the sixth when Bisenius singled and pinch-runner Peyton Barnes scored on a Tandon Dorn sacrifice fly.

The Wildcats outhit the Mustangs 8-2 in the opener. Janes led the Wildcats at the plate with three singles, and a run scored to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Bodie Cooper doubled while Aaron Krier, Thompson, Bisenius and Petersen each added hits.

Ledezma improved to 3-2 on the season with his complete-game gem. He faced just two batters over the minimum, allowing one run on two hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Down 4-0 entering the fifth inning of the second game, Wayne State tied the score with two swings of the bat as Petersen belted a three-run homer to center, followed by a solo blast from Cody Jenkins to tie the score at 4-4.

Southwest regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Wayne State responded with a four-run seventh to take the 8-5 advantage. The Wildcats had five hits in the inning, with key hits coming on RBI singles from Cooper and Bisenius.

After a solo homer in the seventh cut the lead to two, the Wildcats put up another run in the ninth for a 9-6 lead when pinch runner Mitch Gullikson scored on an Mustang error on a failed pickoff attempt.

Southwest rallied in the bottom of the ninth with three runs on three hits to tie the game, and could have won it before the Wildcats cut down a runner at the plate to send the game to extra innings.

Tandon Dorn hit a grand slam homer to highlight an eight-run 10th inning that closed out the sweep for the WIldcats. Other key hits in the extra inning were an RBI double from Aaron Krier and RBI single from Tanner Simons.

The Wildcats had 18 hits in the win. Petersen was 4-for-6 with a three-run homer, three RBI and three runs scored. Krier ended 3-for-6 with a double and two runs scored. Dorn was 2-for-4 with a grand slam and four RBI while Simons, Cody Jenkins and Bodie Cooper each added two hits. Janes also had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. Bobby St. Pierre was credited with the win in relief, working the final two-thirds of an inning in the 10th.

Wayne State (15-17, 10-10 NSIC) will be at home this weekend, facing Bemidji State in a four-game NSIC series with doubleheaders scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 12 p.m. both days at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
