Wayne State College edges Ottawa in five sets, go onto win 10th straight match to sweep Braves

Ahead of the AVCA Small College Beach Championships approaching later this month and just about three weeks in-between matches, Wayne State College hosted a weekend doubleheader.

From the sand volleyball courts on the campus of Wayne State College, WSC welcomed Ottawa University (KS) on Saturday.

Wayne State College edged Ottawa University, 3-2 in the opening match followed by a 4-1 victory. WSC has now won 10 consecutive matches to improve to 13-2 overall. The Wildcats also swept Ottawa University in Kansas on March 18.

Wayne State’s #1 pairing of junior Taylor Bunjer and freshman Ava Spies went 2-0 on the day sweeping their opponents 21-19, 24-22 as well as 21-11 and 21-17. The #2s in sophomore Channatee Robles and freshman Chloe Hanel handled business winning their first match by double digits in both sets (21-8, 21-9) and then went on to win 21-16 and 21-17 in their second match.

Seniors Rhianna Wilhelm and Brooke Peltz added to the ‘Cats success with two wins as the #5 pair. The pair defeated their opponents 21-7, 21-10 as well as 21-12 and 21-12. Freshman Molly Romano and senior Brooklyn Kusler split 1-1 after going three sets in their first match that saw Ottawa come out with the win. The duo bounced back in their second match and won 21-9 and 22-20.

Freshman Anna Borner went undefeated in both exhibition matches thanks to the help of sophomore Laney Kathol in the first game and freshman Jolee Ryan in the second. Borner and Kathol outpaced the Braves 21-6 and 21-7 and then Borner and Ryan went 21-18, 21-8 to win the second exhibition match.

The Wayne State College beach volleyball team will next travel to Gulf Shores, Alabama for the AVCA Small College Beach Championships April 17 through the 19.
