The Wayne State College men’s basketball team, along with four players, received academic honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches Tuesday afternoon as the Wildcats earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award while players Noah Erickson, Cody McCullough, Alec Millender and Sean Stokes were named to the NABC Honors Court.
The NABC Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes men’s basketball programs that completed the 2023-24 academic year with a team grade point average of 3.00 or higher.
As a team this season, Wayne State produced a cumulative grade point average of 3.243 and was one of eight teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference to collect the award.
The NABC Honors Court, includes junior, senior and graduate students who closed the 2023-24 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Over 360 programs in NCAA, NAIA and junior college levels along with more than 2,100 players were recognized with the honors.
Erickson, a junior forward from Millard North HS, was a repeat selection to the NABC Honors Court. This season he averaged 2.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per game shooting 45.2 percent (33-73) from the field. Erickson is a two-time NSIC Winter All-Academic Team selection.
McCullough, a junior forward/center from Ankeny, Iowa (Centennial HS), is a repeat honoree to the NABC Honors Court after averaging 8.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game this season. He is a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection and was named the Bob Cunningham Male Scholar Athlete of the Year at WSC this season.
Millender, a junior guard from Chicago, Illinois (Saint Rita of Cascia HS), was named to the NSIC Winter All-Academic Team this season. On the court, he averaged 13.2 points and 3.2 assists per game this season.
Stokes, a junior from Bensalem, Pa. (Conwell-Egan Catholic HS), was a repeat NABC Honors Court selection. He averaged 3.7 points and 1.5 rebounds per game and is a two-time NSIC All-Academic Team selection.
Wayne State finished the season at 16-14 overall and was 9-13 in conference games.
