Wayne State, Minot State play to scorless tie in soccer action

Wayne State and Minot State played to a scoreless tie in Northern Sun Conference women’s soccer Friday evening in Minot, N.D.

Minot State held a slim 5-4 edge in shots during the first period with Wildcat freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Bagley recording three saves. Wayne State had the only two corner kicks of the first half, but could not convert on either opportunity.

The Wildcats had just four shots in the second half, but two came in a span of 24 seconds from sophomore Rylie Wehner in the final 1:10 that required saves on both from Minot State goalkeeper Erin Rafferty to keep the contest scoreless and send it into overtime.

Minot State had the lone shot of the first overtime, which was high, sending the contest into a second overtime. The Wildcats continued their strong defensive play in the second overtime period. Minot State registered one shot and one corner kick as Wayne State denied the Beavers from scoring to preserve the scoreless draw.

Minot State held a 13-8 advantage over the Wildcats in shots and 4-3 in shots on goal. The Beavers held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks over WSC while Wayne State had eight fouls to six on the Beavers.

Wehner led Wayne State with four shots and two on goal. Madison Kemp had the other Wildcat shot on goal. Bagley notched her second shutout of the season for the Wildcats, credited with four saves in the contest.        

The Wildcats (1-4-1, 1-2-1 NSIC) will be in action again on Sunday afternoon, visiting University of Mary for a 1 p.m. contest.
