Wayne State hosted 10 other area track and field teams in their spring outdoor debut with the Wildcats Outdoor Track and Field Classic at the LeRoy Simpson Track this weekend.
Wayne State junior unior Michaela Dendinger won the shot put and discus with NCAA provisional qualifying marks to highlight the Wildcat effort in their home meet. She had a winning toss of 50 feet, 2 3/4 inches to win the shot put, while setting a new meet record in the discus with a winning toss of 163-5.
Shelby Poell and Shelby Roth tied for first place in the high jump, with both clearing 5-2 1/4 to share top honors.
Other top efforts for the Wayne State women included Riana Noelle finishing sixth in the triple jump (30-9 1/4), Kacie O’Connor taking seventh in the discus (141-9), Siera Zach finishing eighth in the long jump (15-11) and Alexis Oswald taking ninth in the 1,500-meter rn (5:46.86).
In men’s action, junior Brady Metz posted a first place finish in the triple jump, winning with a best effort of 39-10 3/4.
Josh Spenner captured a second place finish in the pole vault, clearing 15-1 1/2, while Robert Sullivan was seventh at 13-1 3/4.
Isaias Solorio was fourth in the 10,000-meter run (35:51.02) while Nicholas Fly was fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:12.84.
Jordan Zautke placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 10.99 seconds, while Kole Heller was sixth at 11.58. Allen Arauz took fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:00.05, with Cody Kralicek fifth in 1:00.89. In the 800 meter run, Nick Schmit came in fifth at 1:59.43 with Kak Ayaj placing eighth at 2:02.61.
Other Wildcat finishers included Travis Eller taking fifth in the high jump (6-0), Jayle Hinkle placing seventh in the shot put (47-6 1/4), Matt Nemec coming in eighth in the discus (145-10) and Brandon Marker was sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.38) and ninth in the 400-meter dash (53.78).
The hammer throw and javelin events will take place Sunday afternoon, due to a weather-related change in the schedule. Wayne State will be in action again on Saturday, April 1 competing in the Emporia State Relays in Emporia, Kan.
