Wayne State’s defense kept Northern State out of the end zone to post a 13-7 win in the home opener for the Wildcats Saturday at Cunningham Field.

Northern State got on the board late in the first quarter on a 34-yard field goal by Payton Eue, but Wayne State matched that in the final minute of the period with a 37-yard tally by Alex Powders to make it 3-3 after one period.

Wayne State scored the game’s only touchdown in the second quarter when Nick Bohn found Jadon Johnson for a 60-yard scoring strike, giving Wayne State a 10-3 halftime advantage.

The Wildcats used a Northern State turnover to add another field goal, a 43-yarder by Powders. Northern State used a Wildcat turnover and turned that into a 33-yard field goal by Eue to make it 13-6, but the Wayne State defense came through in the clutch to seal the win, improving the Wildcats’ record to 2-0 under new coach Logan Masters.

The Wildcats hit the road next weekend for their second trip to North Dakota in three weeks, visiting Minot State Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
