Wayne State women handle Peru State

Wayne State used three players in double figures while 12 of 13 players scored as the Wildcats defeated Peru State College 81-51 in non-conference women’s basketball played Sunday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.

The Wildcats never trailed, scoring the first eight points of the contest. Wayne State used 64 percent shooting in the first quarter (11-of-17) to take a 28-18 lead on the Bobcats.

Wayne State continued its stellar shooting in the second quarter, going 8-of-15 from the field and outscored the Bobcats 22-12 to take a 50-30 lead at intermission.

The third quarter saw Wayne State hold Peru State to just one basket and the Wildcats outscored Peru State 17-4 to take a 67-34 lead and the Wildcats went on to the easy victory.

Wayne State finished the game going 30-of-64 from the field for 46.9 percent, but made just 2-of-15 from the 3-point line. The Wildcats were 19-for-28 at the charity stripe. Paige Ballinger led a balanced Wildcat effort with 13 points followed by Kacie O’Connor and Taylor Wangerin with 12 points each.

Wayne State held a commanding 51-30 edge in rebounding over Peru State thanks to 11 rebounds from senior Katie Hoskins followed by seven from Maggie Schulte.

The Wildcats (2-0) will be at home again Friday, hosting Rockhurst in a 7 p.m. contest.
