Wayne suffers season-opening loss despite early safety

Ahead of their home opener, the Wayne High football team began their season on the road with the defense being the early highlight of week one.

From Roncalli Catholic in Omaha on August 29, the Blue Devils suffered a 20-2 loss to begin their season at 0-1.

The Blue Devils used a two-point safety in the first quarter to score their lone points of the game. Senior defensive linemen Elijah Stecki and Austin Heiser were credited with the stop.

The game remained 2-0 at half with Wayne ahead before allowing seven points in the third and 13 points in the fourth.

Wayne's offense was led by a pair of quarterbacks being () Easton Endicott going 3-4 for 40 yards (long of 17) with an interception and a fumble as senior Gavin Anderson going 2-12 for 36 yards (long of 24).

The run game was locked and loaded as senior Taven Ocampo carried the rock 24 times for 90 yards (long of 14).

Senior Brodey Munter followed with 21 yards (long of 11) and six rushes as junior Cohen Olson tallied five carries for 16 yards.

Senior Jace Jorgensen hauled in three catches for 43 yards (long of 24). Juniors Chase Nelson (17 yards) and William Patefield (16 yards) each had one reception.

Defensievley, Nelson posted a team-high six solo tackles as Munter added five tackles (four solo). Taven Ocampo recovered a fumble and had one tackle for loss of his three solo stops as Jorgensen recorded an interception and had a TFL among his three solo tackles.

Freshman Rhys Hanish also had an interception.

The Wayne High football team will next welcome Cedar Catholic on Friday, September 5 at 7 p.m. from Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College. The Blue Devils Dance Team will provide the tailgate starting at 6 p.m.
