Wayne survives overtime thriller, advances to Mid State Conference finals

Friday night showcased a rematch in the Mid State Conference boys semifinal round.

From Cedar Catholic in Hartington, Wayne took on Cedar Catholic during the first semifinal game of the night.

Earlier this season, Wayne won a 55-38 home contest over the Trojans on January 24.

Friday night favored Wayne again but this time in overtime, 55-49.

During the boys only contest, Wayne led 14-10 after the opening quarter before extending their lead thanks to an 11-9 second quarter to go up 25-19 at half. Cedar Catholic then won the third quarter, 13-11 and fourth, 12-8 to force overtime tied at 44-44. In OT, the Blue Devils used an 11-5 advantage as final favored Wayne winning 55-49 in OT to pick up their fifth straight victory improving to 18-2 while the Trojans fell to 14-6 having their four-game winning streak snapped.

Wayne High was led in scoring by senior Colson Nelsen (5-6 FT) with 16 points on three made three’s as senior Kaden Keller (6-10 FT) with eight rebounds and sophomore Jaxson Kneifl (four made three’s) both scored 14 points.

Other scoring came from senior Gavin Redden with four points, junior Drew Reinhardt tallied three points as two-point scoring came from juniors Jace Jorgensen (seven rebounds) and Brodey Munter.

Wayne finished 12-17 from the foul line.
