Wayne takes perfect 28-0 mark into districts

The Wayne High softball team made fast work of South Sioux City to close out the regular season Tuesday, needing just three innings to dispose of the Cardinals 18-0 in South Sioux City.

Wayne scored three in the first inning, thanks to two passed balls and an RBI triple by Sidney Biggerstaff. They added five more in the second inning, with a Tori Kniesche sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Kendall Dorey highlighting the inning.

In the third, Wayne sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs. Biggerstaff and Kayla Fleming both had two-run doubles as the big hits in the inning.

Wayne finished the game with seven hits and 11 different players scored runs. Fleming and Annie Kniesche both came home three times, Virginia Kniesche, Josie Thompson and Maysn Dorey each scored twice and Biggerstaff, Tori Kniesche, Abby Ankeny, Kendall Dorey, Allison Claussen and Aliah Schulz each scored once.

Tori Kniesche made fast work of the South Sioux batting lineup, setting all nine down via strikeout and throwing just 35 pitches in the three-inning battle.

Wayne High takes their 28-0 record into the C-5 district tournament that starts Thursday at the Summer Sports Complex. They will face the O’Neill-Highway 91 winner at 1 p.m., with the double-elimination tournament running through Friday.
