Freshman Aiden Breedlove fired a four-hit shutout in the opener while Cody Jenkins went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI’s in the second game to lift Wayne State College in a 1-0 and 5-4 sweep over Northern State on Sunday in Aberdeen, S.D.

The lone run of the first game was scored in the second inning as David Janes was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a Northern error, advanced to third on a walk to Bodie Cooper and scored on a double play ball by Tandon Dorn.

Northern State had one scoring threat in the fourth, as the Wolves had three of their four hits in the inning and loaded the bases with just one out before Breedlove got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts. He retired the final nine Wolves in order as the Wildcats hung on for the win.

Dorn was 2-for-3 with a double to lead Wayne State’s five-hit effort. Janes, Jackson Petersen and Peyton Barnes each singled. Breedlove (4-3) earned the first shutout of the year for the Wildcat staff, allowing four hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats got the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning to get the win and take three of four from the Wolves on the road.

Wayne State scored two in the first on Petersen’s RBI single and a solo homer from Cody Jenkins, then doubled their lead in the third on a Jenkins RBI double and a passed ball that brought home Tanner Simons, who reached on a walk.

Northern got three runs in the third and another in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4, but Wayne State used a walk, a sacrifice, a wild pitch and a Kyle Thompson sacrifice fly to bring home the game-winner in the eighth, and Kyle Kennebeck pitched two scoreless innings to get the save for Keenan Breen, who improved to 7-0 with the win in relief of starter Teague McFadden.

Jenkins was 2-for-3 with a homer, double, two RBI and two runs scored to lead a nine-hit effort. Petersen was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Aaron Krier and Tandon Dorn each added doubles.

Wayne State (23-19, 18-12 NSIC) is on the road Wednesday afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. NSIC doubleheader at Concordia-St. Paul.
