Wayne takes two from O'Neill in softball twinbill

Wayne cranked out three home runs and got a pair of one-hit shutouts as they defeated O’Neill 9-0 and 12-0 in Mid State Conference softball action Tuesday in O’Neill.

In the first game, Wayne got on the board in the third on a Kennedy Maly double, scoring Jenna Trenhaile. They added two more in the fourth on Trenhaile’s second homer of the year over the wall in center.

The Blue Devils exploded for six runs in the fifth to end the game on the eight-run mercy rule. Abby Ankeny had an RBI groundout, Sidney Biggerstaff scored on a passed ball, Josie Thompson scored on a Masyn Dorey single, Dorey came home on a Trenhaile double and Maly sent Trenhaile home with her second double of the game.

That was enough for Tori Kniesche, who allowed one hit and one walk while striking out eight.

Trenhaile had three hits, three RBI and three runs scored to lead a nine-hit effort. Maly had two hits and two RBI and Dorey scored two runs.

In the nightcap, Wayne put up three in the first and nine in the fourth to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule after four innings.

Trenhaile scored on a Tori Kniesche single in the first, and Dorey scored as a courtesy runner on a Biggerstaff sacrifice fly, with Maly coming home on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, Wayne sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine, getting a leadoff solo homer from Trenhaile and a two-run blast by Biggerstaff to highlight the big inning. Nicole Fertig scored on a Kniesche single, Jamie Gamble scored on a Thompson double, Trenhaile brought home Thompson and Allison Claussen with a single and later came home on an error to close out the scoring.

Wayne had a season-high 14 hits in the second game, with Trenhaile and Maly each recording three. Ankeny and Tori Kniesche had two hits apiece. Trenhaile, Biggerstaff and Tori Kniesche each had three RBI, while Trenhaile scored three times and Dorey and Maly each plated twice.

Kniesche threw her second one-hitter of the evening, fanning eight and walking two.

The 5-1 Blue Devils will play in the Lincoln Public Schools Classic on Saturday at Doris Bair Park. Wayne will battle Class A foe Fremont, defending Class B champion Elkhorn South and Grand Island Northwest in pool play.
