The Wayne High track and field teams came away with three runner-up trophies and a championship during Saturday’s Wisner Lions Meet at Wisner-Pilger High School.
Both varsity teams finished as runner-ups in the 10-team meet. The Wayne girls finished two points behind Battle Creek in the final team standings, while the boys were also runner-up to the Braves with a solid second-place finish.
In girls action, Kylie Hammer and Jenna Trenhaile both won individual events. Hammer set a new meet record in the triple jump with a winning effort of 36 feet, 2 1/4 inches, while Trenhaile took top honors in the discus.
The 1,600-meter relay team of Trenhaile, Kiara Hochstein, Gabi Meyer and Hammer also took home a first-place finish. Seconds went to the 3,200-meter relay team of Meyer, Molly Hoskins, Allison Echtenkamp and Hochstein, Hammer in the 100 and Trenhaile in the shot, while thirds were won by Hammer in the 400, Meyer in the 800 and Andrea Torres in the 3,200.
In boys action, Wayne got a 1-2-3 finish in the triple jump with Grayson McBride, Cody Rogers and Mason Lee taking the top three spots.
Wayne had five other runner-up finishes, including Christian Rogers in the 100 and 200, McBride in the long jump, and the 400 and 1,600-meter relay teams. Tyler Pecena, Cody Rogers, Emil Hapanowitz and Christian Rogers ran the sprint relay, while Ryan Jaixen, Nolan Reynolds, RJ Liska and Pecena authored the second-place effort in the mile relay.
In JV action, Wayne’s girls edged Battle Creek by six points for the team title, while the Wayne boys finished as runner-up to the Norfolk High freshman team.
In girls action, Maddie Beair had a pair of firsts in the 1,600 and 3,200 and Frankie Klausen won the 800. The 400-meter and 3,200-meter relays also finished first. Winning the sprint relay was Hailey Backer, Ashton Boyer, Korinna Niemann and Skylar Cooper, while the distance relay winners included Beair, Sarah Greenwald, Klausen and Cooper.
Hailey Backer won the pole vault with Maysn Dorey finishing third. Sidney Biggerstaff and Erin O’Reilly went 1-3 in the 100-meter hurdles, Josie Thompson was second in the triple jump, Emily Armstrong was third in the shot put, Sarah Greenwald was third in the 3,200 and the 1,600-meter relay of Dorey, Thompson, O’Reilly and Klausen was third.
In boys action, first were earned by Marcus Fertig in the high jump and triple jump and Aaron Reynolds in the long jump. the 1,600-meter relay of Casey Koenig, Noah Lutt, Fertig and Reynolds also finished first.
Seconds were won by Alex Echtenkamp in the triple jump, Reynolds in the 400 and Tyrus Eisched in the 3,200. Thirds went to Echtenkamp in the pole vault, Fertig in the long jump, Koenig in the 400 and the 400-meter relay of Owen Frideres, Echtenkamp, Cameron Muhs and Koenig.
