Both the boys and girls teams finished fifth out of eight teams as Wayne High opened the outdoor portion of its season Tuesday at the Scotus Relays in Columbus.
Relay scoring took the top three individual performances in each field event to get a team result, with the relay events on the track scored as one entry.
Wayne’s boys won three events in field competition, taking the long jump, triple jump and high jump. Cody Rogers and Aaron Reynolds were part of all three winning teams, while Mason Lee and Alex Echtenkamp were part of the winning long jump and triple jump. Jack Evetovich and Collin Clausen teamed up with Rogers and Reynolds in the high jump.
The pole vaulting foursome of Echtenkamp, Isaac Cliff, Cameron Muhs and Reece Jaqua finished second. Kaden Kneifl, Mike Leatherdale, Will Roberson and Stuart Haseman finished fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus and 400-meter field relay.
On the track, Reynolds, Rogers, Evetovich and Lee took fifth in the 800-meter relay, while the 400-meter freshman relay of Cliff, Koby Nelson, Israel Rodriguez and Liam Spieker finished sixth.
Wayne’s girls had three runner-up finishes, in the shot put (Emily Armstrong, Allison Clausen, Jenna Trenhaile, Faith Junck), pole vault (Maysn Dorey, Hailey Backer, Peyton French, Karlee Janke) and distance medley (Gabi Meyer, Kylie Hammer, Frankie Klausen, Andrea Torres), while the discus tandem of Trenhaile, Claussen, Skylar Mutchler and Emily Longe finished third.
Fourth-place finishes came in the triple jump (Hammer, Josie Thompson, Symphony Jareske, Maggie Fehringer), high jump (Meyer, Shania Anderson, Molly Hoskins, Andi Belt), 6,400-meter relay (Torres, Belt, Hoskins, Meyer), and the 250- and 440-meter shuttle hurdles (Dorey, Sidney Biggerstaff, Erin O’Reilly, Emily Chamberlain). The 800-meter relay of Backer, O’Reilly, Hammer and Ashton Boyer finished fifth.
Wayne will host the Blue Devil Invitational on Tuesday, April 3 at 1 p.m. at the Kern Track and Field Center.
