Wayne victorious during holiday bowling tourney, secure six top medalists

It was busy day on the lanes for a handful of high girls and boys bowling programs following a five-day moratorium break.

From Wildcat Lanes in Wayne, the Wayne Holiday Bowling Tournament was held Friday morning into the afternoon.

The Wayne High girls and boys both went 5-0 on the day to secure first place in the team standings.

The Blue Devil girls were led by individual champion Lindsay Niemann, followed by Graycen Trautman and Regan Fernau following in second and third. Konnor Kai led the Wayne boys to a first place individual finish followed by Jamison Meyer and Dylan Jensen in second and third.

In the girls division, Wayne started their day against Hartington-Newcastle. The two teams would struggle to find their way after the long Christmas break. Wayne would find enough of a groove to slowly pull away for a 727-582 pinfall victory. Winning individual matches for Wayne were Madi Janke (172), Regan Fernau (147), Sammi Gubbels (114), Graycen Trautman / Rylin Hall (165) and Lindsay Niemann (129).

In game two, the Blue Devils came out firing and found their groove.  Wayne pulled away in the first three frames and cruised to the victory against the Viqueens from Columbus Lakeview. Wayne won the pinfall match 840-625. Winning matches were Madi Janke (170), Regan Fernau (190), Sammi Gubbels (146), Graycen Trautman (154) and Lindsay Niemann (175).

Game three pitted Wayne up against the Cardinals from Boone Central. Wayne would struggle a bit in game three but found a way to win the pinfall match 782-486. Winning matches for Wayne were Madi Janke / McKaeya Becker (116), Regan Fernau / Rylin Hall (127), Sammi Gubbels (202), Graycen Trautman (158) and Lindsay Niemann (179).

After the three games of qualifying, Wayne was seeded number one with a pinfall total of 2349.

In bracket play, Wayne battled Boone Central and would get enough marks to win the match with games of 161-122, 151-90 and 164-133.

The win would put Wayne up against Hartington-Newcastle in the championship match.  Wayne would bowl well in the championship match and pull off the victory in four games with scores of 191-111, 126-129, 150-102 and 223-108.

During the boys division, Wayne  started the tournament against Hartington-Newcastle. Both teams started out hot through the first three frames. The Blue Devils would settle in but the Wildcats would cool off a bit. The Blue Devils would finish strong and win the pinfall total 997-747.  Winning individual matches for Wayne were Dylan Jensen (197), Jamison Meyer (210), Konnor Kai (230) and Aiden Petersen (225).  Ben Haschke would tie his match with a 135.

Game two pitted the Blue Devils against the Vikings from Columbus Lakeview. The two teams worked hard to find the line but it was Wayne that found it first and won the pinfall total 944-819. Winning matches in game two were Dylan Jensen (193), Jamison Meyer (225), Ben Haschke (156), and Konnor Kai (223).  Aiden Petersen / Alex Rodriguez bowled 147 in game two.

Game three, the final game of qualifying, had Wayne face off against Boone Central. The Blue Devils would get out quick and bowl extremely well. Wayne would pull away quickly for the 1030-715 victory. Winning matches for Wayne were Dylan Jensen (216), Jamison Meyer (209), Alex Rodriguez (210), Konnor Kai (193) and Aiden Petersen / Jaden Dramse (202).

After qualifying rounds, Wayne bowled a total of 2971 pins, good enough for the first seed.

  In bracket play, the Blue Devils would face off against Boone Central. Wayne would come out consistent in all three games and won the Baker games (187-163, 225-142 and 166-144) to win in a sweep. The win put the Blue Devils in the championship against Hartington-Newcastle.

The championship match had a lot of energy. The two teams battled hard throughout the first two games. Wayne stepped up to the challenge each game and then won the third and final game pulling away. Wayne won the extremely tough Baker match against a very good Hartington-Newcastle in a sweep (206-189, 163-154 and 190-133).

The Wayne High girls and boys bowling teams will next compete on Thursday, January 9 during a home dual with Norfolk Catholic starting at 6 p.m. from Wildcat Lanes in Wayne.
