Wayne volleyball takes Wisner-Pilger title

The Wayne High volleyball team beat three of the top four seeds to come away with the first-place trophy at Saturday’s Wisner-Pilger Invitational.
The Blue Devils opened with a 25-20, 25-17 win over Pierce, getting 10 kills from Allison Echtenkamp, six from Kylie Hammer, five each from Emily Armstrong and Lindy Sandoz, and four from Shania Anderson. Sandoz had 15 assists and Brenna Vovos added 12. Hammer led the defense with nine digs.
In the semifinals, Wayne edged Chambers/Wheeler Central 25-23, 26-24. Sandoz had six kills, Echtenkamp had five and Anderson had four. Sandoz and Vovos had eight and seven assists, respectively, and Armstrong and Hammer shared honors in the digs department with 10 apiece. Armstrong also had three ace serves.
In the finals, the Blue Devils beat the host Gators in straight sets, winning 25-21, 25-14. Echtenkamp led the team with nine kills and Sandoz had 16 assists.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge went 1-2 in the tournament to finish seventh. They lost to Wisner-Pilger (25-23, 25-17) and Homer (25-21, 25-20) before beating Madison (25-13, 25-11).
Wayne, 8-7, hosts Arlington and West Point-Beemer in a triangular on Tuesday before playing at Stanton on Thursday.
