Wayne, Wakefield battle at NE Classic

Both Wayne and Wakefield’s volleyball teams saw their fortunes head different directions on the second day of the Northeast Nebraska Classic.

Wayne went 0-2 and Wakefield was 2-0 in pool play on Thursday. Saturday’s play saw the Blue Devils go 3-0 in the Bronze bracket while the Trojans lost a couple of tough matches to state qualifying teams to finish 1-2 in the Gold bracket.

In pool play Thursday, Wayne fell to Wisner-Pilger (26-24, 25-20) and North Bend (25-21, 25-23). Wakefield, meanwhile, posted straight-set wins over Guardian Angels CC (25-20, 25-21) and Tekamah-Herman (26-24, 25-8) to advance to the Gold bracket.

In the Bronze round-robin tournament Saturday at Pender, Wayne won all three matches in straight sets, beating Pender (25-11, 25-20), Bancroft-Rosalie (25-7, 25-9) and Tekamah-Herman (25-17, 25-23) to win the pool.

Wakefield played in a very tough Gold pool that saw all four teams come away with at least one win. The Trojans opened with a 25-17, 25-17 win over Oakland-Craig before falling to Archbishop Bergan (25-20, 23-25, 25-21) and North Bend (25-18, 25-22) to end the day 1-2.
