With one weekend tournament getting underway, another Wayne youth baseball team was on the road for a make-up game Friday evening.
From Eaton Field in Wakefield, the Wayne White Ponies opened pool play during the Mid-Summer Classic while the Wayne Blue Broncos traveled back to Tekamah-Herman Purple following a Wednesday night rainout.
In Wakefield, Wayne White suffered a 12-6 loss against Norfolk Steel 14U falling to 7-2 overall.
The Wayne Ponies held a 5-3 lead after the first inning before Norfolk Steel answered with a four-run second to lead 7-5. Following a scoreless third, Norfolk Steel added three runs in the fourth and a 2-1 advantage in the sixth to win 12-6 and outhit Wayne White, 8-3.
Will Patefield doubled, drove in a run and scored while Parker Zara singled and drove in a run.
Angel Chavez singled and scored; Noah Magnuson accounted for a RBI and run scored as single runs came from Colston Starzl, Maddux Heithold and Camden Hall.
Starzl (111 pitches) suffered the loss in four and two-thirds allowing 12 runs (seven earned) off eight hits while striking out two batters, walking seven and hitting two. Zara (four) recorded the final out with a strikeout.
The Wayne White Ponies will next face Creighton to close out pool play in Wakefield Saturday morning now at 10:30 a.m.
Other first round Pony Division scores favored Wakefield winning 10-9 over the West Point Cardinals in Pool One and Laurel won 15-9 against Vermillion (SD) in Pool Three.
From Tekamah, the Wayne Blue Broncos secured a 17-2 victory to improve to 8-0.
Wayne Blue led 4-1 after the first inning and tacked on three more runs in the second. Following a scoreless third, the Wayne Blue Broncos used a 5-1 advantage in the fourth and another five runs in the fifth to win 17-2 and outhit Tekamah-Herman Purple, 7-1.
Brayden Stegemann singled twice, drove in four runs and scored three times as Mason Wendte doubled, drove in three runs and scored three times.
Sy Chase singled and scored four times; Forrest Gearhart singled, drove in a run and scored twice; Kian Pick singled and drove in two runs; Braden McManigal singled; Blake Heithold accounted for a RBI and run scored; Mason Rhods scored twice as Ryan Loberg and Isaiah Wright both scored.
Stegemann (67 pitches) picked up the win in four innings allowing two earned runs off one hit while striking out seven batters and walking two. Heithold (20) worked an inning striking out three batters and walking one.
