Wayne wins big at home, Rodriguez finds Ankeny twice on trick plays

A pair of one-win teams looked to build momentum into the final week of the 11-man NSAA high school football season Friday night.

From Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College, Wayne High entertained Schuyler.

The Blue Devils saw their four-game losing streak come to an end thanks to a 33-0 home shutout victory over Schuyler. Wayne improved to 2-6 as the Warriors fell to 1-7 dropping their fourth straight.

Neither team scored in the first quarter until the Blue Devils put points on the board in the second quarter. A trick play put Wayne ahead thanks to wide out Alex Rodriguez floating pass over the Schuyler defender and into the hands of tight end Calvin Ankeny from 15 yards out.

Wayne led 7-0 at the break.

WHS added another touchdown in the third quarter on a trick play to go up 14-0. Wayne lined up for a field goal but a direct snap to Rodriguez led to a second passing touchdown to Ankeny from eight yards

Quarterback Kaden Keller also connected with wide receiver Jace Jorgensen on a 23-yard strike later in the third quarter to push the lead to 21-0.

In the fourth, Wayne used by back-to-back rushing touchdowns by the tailbacks of Taven Ocampo (five yards) and Will Leseberg (one yard). Both two-point conversions failed.

Wayne shutout Schuyler, 33-0.

Keller went 9-18 for 159 yards, one touchdown and one interception along with rushing three times for seven yards. Rodriguez completed both of his passes for 25 yards and two scores while also hauling in three catches for 44 yards.

Taven Ocampo led the rushing attack with 28 attempts for 119 yards and one score as Leseberg added six carries for nine yards and one score to go along with one catch for 37 yards.

Ankeny hauled in five receptions for 72 yards and two scores as Jorgensen tallied two catches for 31 yards and one score.

Defensively, Leseberg recorded seven tackles (six solo) and one tackle for loss; Ankeny followed with seven tackles (two solo), one sack and one TFL as Chase Nelson tacked on seven tackles (six solo).

Jamison Meyer totaled three tackles for loss (four tackles/two solo); William Patefield had two TFLs (four tackles); Ocampo posted a sack and two tackles for loss (three tackles/two solo) and Waylon Huff had one TFL (four tackles/three solo).

Rodriguez also finished with an interception as fumble recoveries came from Taven Ocampo and Huff.

Wayne High ran 23 plays for 321 yards (184 passing/137 rushing) while Schuyler totaled 140 yards on 29 plays (66 passing/74 rushing). Wayne was 1-5 on third down and 1-1 on fourth down as the Warriors went 4-5 in third down and 0-1 on fourth down.

The Wayne High football team will close out their season on Friday, Oct. 25 hosting Columbus Scotus at 7 p.m.
