Wayne/Wakefield spotted Norfolk three first-inning runs, then came from behind to post a 5-4 win over the Panthers in action Thursday at Memorial Field in Norfolk.
The hosts got on the board with three runs in the first inning off of winning pitcher Tyler Lutt, but Wayne/Wakefield came back with three of their own in the third to tie the game.
The Blue Devils’ rally started when Adam Bentjen walked and scored when Lutt reached on an error. Caden Korth came home later in the inning on another Norfolk miscue, and Lutt tied the game when he scored from third on a passed ball.
In the fourth, Korth singled home Julio Sanchez to give Wayne/Wakefield the lead for good. They added an insurance run in the fifth when Tucker Nichols scored on a bases-loaded walk. Norfolk scored in the bottom of the fifth, but left the tying run at second and went down in order in the sixth and seventh as Wayne/Wakefield beat Norfolk for the second time this season.
Korth had two of Wayne’s seven hits in the game. Lutt went the distance, striking out four and allowing four hits.
Wayne/Wakefield is 6-8 on the year and will host Seward in an 11 a.m. game on Saturday at Hank Overin Field.
