Wayne/Wakefield loses extra-inning battle

The Wayne/Wakefield baseball team moved a scheduled home game with Crete, and Crete scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to come away with a 7-6 win Thursday afternoon at Tuxedo Park.
Wayne/Wakefield trailed 4-0 before mounting a comeback that forced extra innings.
In the fourth, Julio Sanchez lashed an RBI single to center, scoring Mason Lee for their first run of the game. Sanchez later came home on a Micah Sprouls single to right to make it 4-2.
Crete got another run in the fourth, but Wayne/Wakefield tied the game in the sixth with three runs. Sprouls started the rally with an RBI single, scoring Edgar Ficke-Anderson, Caden Korth’s RBI single scored Mikey Reyes and Sprouls came home on a passed ball to make it 5-5.
Crete retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Wayne/Wakefield tied the game again in the seventh when Lee scored on a bases-loaded walk to Sprouls to force extra innings.
Wayne/Wakefield put a runner on in the eighth, but Tyler Lutt was caught stealing to end the inning. After Wayne/Wakefield was put down in order in the ninth, Crete loaded the bases and got the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice.
Sprouls led Wayne/Wakefield (0-3) with two hits and three RBI’s. Sanchez and Korth also had RBI hits, and Lutt, Brennan O’Reilly and Noah Braun added hits to the seven-hit attack.
Adam Bentjen pitched six innings, striking out four and allowing eight hits and one walk. Zane Jackson pitched two innings of relief and took the loss.
Wayne/Wakefield plays a doubleheader Saturday at Wahoo, with the first pitch at 12 p.m.
