Wayne State beat Minot State 9-4 and lost to Concordia-St. Paul 4-3 in baseball action Friday at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn.
Concordia-St. Paul scored all four runs in the fifth innings, using two hits and a Wildcat error that resulted in three unearned runs.
Wayne State got a run in the fifth when Cody Castro singled home David Janes, who reached on a hit by pitch. In the bottom of the ninth, Wayne State scored two more runs on four hits, highlighted by an RBI double by Bodie Cooper and an RBI single by Janes. Janes moved to third base on a single and fielder’s choice, but was left stranded as the tying run.
Hunter Weinhoff took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs on four hits in five innings, striking out three and walking two. Keenan Breen pitched four innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts.
In the first game of the day, Cooper went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI to help the Wildcats beat Minot State.
Cooper hit a three-run homer to right to break a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, scoring Tanner Simons and Cody Jenkins. They added another run in the seventh on an Aaron Krier RBI double, then put the game out of reach with five in the ninth. Cooper, Kyle Thompson and Peyton Barnes all had RBI singles in the big inning.
Simons had two hits and two runs and Jenkins and Krier each added two hits to Wayne State’s 13-hit attack. Bobby St. Pierre got the win on the mound with 6 1/3 innings of six-hit pitching, striking out seven. Kyle Kennebaeck, Joey Lenihan and Taner Ledezma all pitched well in relief.
Wayne State, 3-6, plays one more game at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, facing Winona State on Saturday morning at 1 a.m.
