Wildcat baseball splits Saturday home doubleheader thanks to Shelburne complete game with 11 Ks

A second straight four-game home weekend series began Saturday afternoon for the Wayne State College baseball team.

From the Pete Chapman Complex, WSC welcomed Minot State University.

The host Wildcats first picked up an 8-3 win before suffering an 8-7 loss to snap a seven-game winning streak. WSC moved to 10-9 (6-4 NSIC) as the Beavers are now 11-7 (6-4 NSIC).

In the opening game, Wayne State College took control early thanks to four runs in the home half of the first. Senior Chase Douglas posted a two-run home run scoring redshirt junior Cam Madsen followed by a two-run homerun by senior Quinn McCafferty scoring sophomore Max Heard.

WSC then added two more runs in the second to extend their lead at 6-0. Madsen drove in junior Casey Prychak as Heard doubled in Douglas.

The Wildcats would plate one run in the bottom of the third to go up 7-0. Junior Braden Cannon recorded a sac-fly soring senior Kaden Young.

Following back-to-back scoreless innings, Wayne State College brought in one more run in the sixth. Douglas added a RBI groundout scoring Madsen.

Minot State University put runs on the board late during a three-run top of the seventh.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 8-3 and outhitting the Beavers, 8-3 while committing two errors compared to four errors by Minot State.

Chase Douglas recorded a two-run homerun, totaling three RBI and two runs scored; Quinn McCafferty added a two-run homerun as Max Heard doubled, drove in a run and scored.

Cam Madsen singled, drove in a run and scored twice; Kaden Young and Casey Prychak both singled and scored; senior Taylor Gill and junior Nate Cunningham both singled as Braden Cannon accounted for a RBI.

Senior Jackson Shelburne (90 pitches) picked up the complete game victory allowing three runs (one earned) off three hits while striking out 11 batters.

During the second outing, Minot State University began by scoring three runs in the top of the second and added two more runs in the top of the third to lead at-most 5-0.

Wayne State College would erupt for a six-run bottom of the third inning to take a 6-5 lead. Douglas started with a two RBI double scoring redshirt freshman Connor Hunt and Madsen; Heard then followed with a RBI base hit scoring Douglas as Young posted a three-run homerun scoring Heard and Gill.

Following back-to-back scoreless innings, WSC would add to their lead with a run in the sixth going up 7-5 thanks to a McCafferty double scoring Gill.

Neither team scored in the seventh as Minot State University would knot the game up with two runs in the top of the eighth and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth.

Final favored Minot State University holding onto the 8-7 victory despite Wayne State College winning the hit department, 12-7. Both teams committed four errors.

Max Heard singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored; Taylor Gill singled, doubled and scored twice; Quinn McCafferty singled, doubled and drove in a run; Chase Douglas doubled, drove in two runs and scored as Kaden Young posted a three-run homerun. Braden Cannon also singled twice.

Cam Madsen singled and scored; Casey Prychak singled as Connor Hunt scored.

Senior Eli Crnkovich (21) suffered the loss in an inning and two-thirds allowing an earned run off two hits while striking out one batter. Junior Clay Beaumont (89) started the opening five innings allowing five runs (one earned) off three hits while striking out three batters, walking one and hitting one.

Sophomore Kyler Hanson (28) worked two innings striking out and walking one batter each. Sophomore Conlin Grady (10) pitched a third of an inning allowing two runs (one earned) off two hits.
