Wildcat baseball splits vs. Bemidji at Yankton

Bad weather forced a move of Friday’s Wayne State baseball doubleheader with Bemidji State to Yankton, S.D., and the two teams came away with a split in NSIC action.

In the opener, Bemidji State came away with an 8-2 win over the Wildcats, while Wayne State came bak to take the nightcap 13-7.

In the first game, the Beavers took an early 2-0 lead and scored five in the fifth inning to take control of the game.

Wayne State got on the board in the fifth when Tandon Dorn doubled and scored on a Beaver error to make it a 7-1 game. They added another run in the seventh when Dorn was hit by a pitch and later scored on another Bemidji error.

Jackson Petersen led a seven-hit attack with a 3-for-3 effort, including two doubles. Cody Jenkins added two hits and David Janes’ 18-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-3. Bobby St. Pierre took the loss.

In the nightcap, Wayne State jumped on Bemidji State early as Aaron Krier scored on a Cody Jenkins single int he first and Krier hit a tw-run homer in the second to highlight a four-run inning to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead.

Bemidji State came back to take a 6-5 lead in the third inning, but Wayne State regained the lead in the fifth when Tanner Simons and Cody Jenkins scored on a Bemdji throwing error during a Bodie Cooper sacrifice bunt attempt. Peyton Barnes added an RBI double and a bases-clearing double by Krier made it 11-6 and the Wildcats went on to salvage the split.

Krier was 2-for-3 with a homer, double, five RBI’s and four runs scored to lead an eight-hit attack. Barnes was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI’s, and Jenkins was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s.

Keenan Breen got the win as the last of four Wildcat pitchers in the game. Tegan Nissen retired the final six batters to seal the win.

Wayne State (16-18, 11-11 NSIC), are scheduled to complete their four-game series Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Chapman Complex.
