Wildcat baseball takes two from Sioux Falls

Chalk up another series sweep as the Wayne State College baseball team returned to their home diamond during a mid-week showdown.

From the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex, WSC entertained Sioux Falls on Wednesday.

The Wildcats picked up wins of 4-1 and 5-4 extending their winning streak to five. Wayne State College is now 25-16 (21-11 NSIC/third) while the Cougars fell to 22-25 (18-14 NSIC/fourth).

In the opening game, Sioux Falls began with a run in the top of the first inning.

Following back-to-back scoreless innings, the Wildcats plated four runs in the home half of the fourth. Junior Braden Cannon recorded a three-RBI double scoring senior Kaden Young, senior Quinn McCafferty and sophomore Max Heard. Junior Casey Prychak also picked up a RBI base knock driving in Cannon.

Final in seven innings favored Wayne State College winning 4-1 despite being outhit, 6-4. Neither team committed an error.

Braden Cannon doubled, drove in three runs and scored while Casey Prychak singled twice and drove in a run.

Senior Chase Douglas singled as Max Heard, Quinn McCafferty and Kaden Young all scored.

Sophomore Kyler Hanson (89 pitches) picked up the win in five innings allowing an earned run off four hits while striking out and walking two batters each. Sophomore Conlin Grady (11) worked an inning striking out one batter Cannon (22) earned the save (eighth) in the final inning allowing two hits while striking out two batters and walking one.

During the second outing, again it was Sioux Falls with the early charge scoring twice in the top of the first inning.

After USF scored another run in the top of the second to push their lead to 3-0, Wayne State College produced one run in the home half of the third. Sophomore Brayden Chaney used a sac-bunt bringing in Braden Cannon.

Following a scoreless fourth, Wayne State College scored three runs in the home half of the fifth. Chase Douglas posted a sac-fly RBI brining in Prychak followed by a two-run homerun by Max Heard scoring Chaney.

After a scoreless sixth, the Wildcats added one more insurance run in the home half of the seventh to lead 5-3. Redshirt junior Cam Madsen scored on a throwing error.

A comeback fell shy for USF who scored once more in the top of the ninth.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 5-4 despite being outhit, 6-5 . WSC committed one error compared to two errors by the Cougars.

Max Heard posted a two-run homerun; Kaden Young doubled as senior Taylor Gill also singled twice.

Braden Cannon singled and scored; Brayden Chaney accounted for a RBI and run scored; Chase Douglas added a RBI as Cam Madsen and Casey Prychak both scored.

Junior Keinan Lentell (31 pitches) picked up the win in two and a third of scoreless relief allowing two hits while hitting one batter. Cannon collected his ninth save of the season (19) in the final inning allowing an earned run off three hits. Senior Tyson Romero (14) failed to record an out allowing two earned runs off one hit while walking two batters.

Senior Josh Kilzer (32) followed the next three innings allowing one run while striking out four. Redshirt  batters and walking one. Senior Jacob Kneifl (11) pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Redshirt freshman Brooks Kneifl (17) pitched a third of an inning striking out one batter and walking two. Senior Eli Crnkovich (16) came in for an inning and a third before Cannon sealed the deal in the ninth.
