Wildcat football prepare for homecoming game

With six games featuring 12 NSIC football teams being played throughout Saturday, Sept. 28, Wayne State College was idle over the weekend.

The Wildcats are 3-1 overall and 2-1 in NSIC play.

WSC recently picked up a 28-21 win at Winona State on Sept. 21.

Head coach Logan Masters talked about two key positions that were filled by true freshman.

“Brady McGill, he is our true freshman quarterback, he is a really good kicker too,” said Masters. “We were able to run him out there and he was 4-4 kicking extra points when I don’t know if he’s kicked since probably fall camp in a little competition on an off day. Then having two running backs go down within the first two series and they’re two of the best backs in the league. I thought Akeem Knox came in and played really well for a true freshman. Probably the biggest thing he was really good in pass pro.”

Senior punter Trevor Marshall also added to his kicking role and was tabbed the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week last weekend. He averaged 44.7 yards on seven punts and 56.4 yards on five kickoffs. He had three punts over 50 yards that included a game-high 65-yard punt and one inside the 20-yard line.

“He had some bombs and our punt team did a good job covering it,” Masters added. “He kicks some missiles and it’s tough to cover them. Special teams was really solid again and they’ve kind of been the highlight here so far four weeks in. You never know which unit it is on special teams but always one of them always kind of stands out.”

WSC will be also using this off-week to recover from a few early injuries. This past week has been all about the Wildcats which also gave an opportunity for the younger guys to develop more with individual drills.

The Wayne State College football team will return to the gridiron on Saturday, Oct. 5 during their homecoming game against Minot State University at 1 p.m.

Coach Masters mentioned the Beavers will present challenges being a triple option team.

“The discipline and assignment football that it’s going to take there and tweaking some things,” Masters mentioned. “Then their defense does some really unique, unusual things as far as the way they line up, blitz and cover things.”
