Wildcat men snap 14-game losing streak to MSU Moorhead, WSC women drop second straight

Weekend competition closed out over the weekend for the Wayne State College men’s and women’s basketball teams.

From Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minnesota, WSC visited MSU Moorhead on Saturday.

The Wayne State College men picked up a 73-68 overtime win while the Wildcat women suffered a 63-53 loss against the host Dragons.

In the men’s game, MSU Moorhead jumped ahead with an 11-point lead less than five minutes into the first half as WSC chipped away going into the locker room down 29-26. In the second half, there were seven lead changes and five ties in which Wayne State College force overtime with a 32-29 scoring clip tied at 58-58. In OT, the Wildcats took the lead and never gave it back with a 15-10 advantage. Final favored Wayne State College winning 73-68 in overtime to secure their fifth consecutive victory improving to 13-7 (7-7 NSIC) as MSU Moorhead had a two-game winning streak snapped falling to 12-8 (7-7 NSIC).

The win for WSC also snapped a 14-game losing streak against the Dragons with the last win occurring on Feb. 9, 2013 in Moorhead, Minnesota.

Wayne State College leaders were fifth-year senior Cody McCullough (5-8 FG/5-8 FT) who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two assists and one block; freshman Matt Noll (5-12 FG/1-2 3PT/3-4 FT) followed with 14 points, five rebounds, one steal and one block; sophomore JJ Ferrin (5-9 FG/1-4 3PT/2-2 FT) added 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals as fifth-year senior Jay Saunders (4-7 FG/1-2 3PT/3-3 FT) tallied 12 points, one rebound, one assist, two steals and one block.

Other scoring came from fifth-year senior Sean Stokes (three rebounds/two steals) with eight points, senior Ryan Blum (four rebounds/two steals) tacked on seven points as junior transfer Kai Smith (one rebound/one assist) scored four points.

The Wildcats shot 23-53 (43.4%) from the field, 5-16 (31.3%) from the three-point line and 22-26 (84.6%) at the charity stripe.

MSU Moorhead was led by junior Logan Kinsey with 19 points, junior Sam Hastreiter added 15 points, freshman Carson Johnson followed with 12 points as junior Jacob Jennissen followed with 10 points.

The Dragons finished 21-52 (40.4%) from the floor, 11-26 (42.3%) behind the arc and 15-21 (71.4%) from the foul line.

Wayne State College won the rebounding battle, 34 to 32 including 5-6 offensively which led to five second chance points compared to MSU Moorhead with four second chance points. WSC scored 17 points off of 17 MSU Moorhead turnovers while the Dragons scored 11 points off of 13 Wayne State College turnovers.

WSC won the battle in the paint (32-20), fast break scoring (20-4) and bench scoring (11-10).

During the women’s outing, WSC held a 17-13 first quarter lead before MSU Moorhead answered with an 18-13 second quarter to go up 31-30 at the break. The host Dragons outscored Wayne State College, 17-13 in the third and 15-10 in the fourth. Final favored MSU Moorhead winning 63-53 to pick up their third straight win improving to 9-11 (7-7 NSIC) while WSC dropped their second straight falling to 9-9 (6-8 NSIC).

Wayne State College leaders were senior Tate Norblade (7-10 FG/0-1 3PT/1-1 FT) with 15 points, one rebound, three assists and one steal as senior Carsyn Boswell (4-8 FG/2-3 3PT) followed with 10 points and one assist.

Other scoring came from senior Maya Fitzpatrick (one rebound/three assists/two steals/two blocks) and junior Meg Rietz (three rebounds/one assist/one steal/one block) both had eight points, senior Delaney Clark (three rebounds/one assist) added six points, junior Kylah VanDonkersgoed (six rebounds/three assists/two blocks) tallied four points as sophomore Booklyn Kruse (two rebounds/one block) had two points.

The Wildcats shot 22-57 (38.6%) from the field, 7-26 (26.9%) from the three-point line and 2-4 (50%) at the charity stripe.

MSU Moorhead was led by sophomore Abby Berge with 15 points and eight rebounds, junior Terryn Johnson recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds as senior Natalie Jens followed with 12 points.

The Dragons finished 23-55 (41.8%) from the floor, 3-14 (21.4%) behind the arc and 14-21 (66.7%) from the foul line.

MSU Moorhead won the rebounding battle, 43-27 including 12-4 offensively which led to 11 second chance points compared to WSC with six second chance points. WSC scored eight points off of nine MSU Moorhead turnovers while the Dragons scored eight points off of 11 Wayne State College turnovers.
