Non-conference play concluded for the Wayne State College men’s basketball team over the weekend.
From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, WSC welcomed Clarke University (IA) on Saturday.
The Wildcats were able to get back on the winning track with a 106-46 victory over Clarke. WSC is now 6-1 on the season (remaining 0-1 in NSIC pay) while it was an exhibition game for the Pride.
Wayne State College jumped ahead with a 50-23 first half lead followed by a 56-23 advantage in the second half. Final favored WSC winning 106-46.
Five hit double figure scoring led by sophomore JJ Ferrin (6-12 FG/5-10 3PT) who recorded a team-high 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and one steal; fifth year senior Cody McCullough (5-9 FG/5-7 FT) followed with 15 points, eight rebounds, one assist, four blocks and four steals; freshman Matt Noll (5-9 FG/0-1 3PT/2-3 FT) added 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal; junior transfer Kai Smith (4-6 FG/3-5 3PT/1-1 FT) tallied 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal as sophomore Wade Voss tacked on 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Other scoring came from fifth year seniors Jay Saunders (two rebounds/three assists/three blocks/one steal) and Noah Erickson (six rebounds) both with eight points; six-point scoring came from freshman Nassir Binion (six rebounds/two assists), sophomore Landon Classen (two rebounds/three assists/two steals) and (redshirt sophomore) Evan Inselman (two rebounds/two assists) all with six points as junior Ryan Blum (four rebounds/one assist) and redshirt freshman Aiden Sullivan (two rebounds) both had three points. Fifth year senior Sean Stokes finished with three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
WSC shot 39-71 (54.9%) from the field, 16-31 (51.6%) from the three-point line and 12-17 (70.6%) at the foul line.
Clarke University (IA) was led by Maximiliano Bowman with 10 points.
The Pride finished 16-59 (27.1%) from the floor, 7-27 (25.9%) from behind the arc and 7-11 (63.6%) from the charity stripe.
Wayne State College outrebounded Clarke University, 40-19 including 16 to six offensive which led to 19 second chance points compared to six second chance points for the Pride. WSC scored 19 points off of 15 Clarke University (IA) turnovers while the Pride scored 15 points off of 11 Wildcat turnovers.
WSC won the battle in the paint (40-12), fast break scoring (33-15) and bench scoring (54-25).
The Wayne State College women and men will resume NSIC play on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 – 7 hosting Minnesota State-Mankato and Winona State University. Women’s games will be at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday followed my men’s competition.
